Dr. Thomas R. Freytag M.D.

Dr. Thomas R. Freytag, M.D., 74, of Wapakoneta, died 10:51 a.m., Sunday, May 11, 2025, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, OH, with his loving family at his side. He was born October 23, 1950, in Sidney, OH, the son of Albert F. and Marjorie M. (DeLaet) Freytag, who preceded him in death. On July 12, 1979, he married Gwynne Morris, and she survives.

Other survivors include 2 children, Brandon T. (Stacey) Freytag, Troy, OH, Jessica R. Freytag, Wapakoneta; 3 grandchildren, Andrew Thomas, Amelia Kate, and Alivia Leeann Freytag; siblings Marjorie A. (Wayne) Jones, Mason, OH, William J. Freytag; a sister-in-law, Lisa Freytag, Minster, OH.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Albert F. Freytag and Joseph R. Freytag.

A graduate of Minster High School, Tom received a Bachelor of Arts degree of Xavier University and his degree in Medicine from The Ohio State University. He served an internship at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton. Tom began his private practice in Wapakoneta in 1981, and became the Auglaize County Coroner in 1984. Tom retired from that position in 2019 as the longest serving coroner in the state. He was a member and past president of the Ohio State Coroner's Board. Tom received the Ohio Family Physician of the Year Award in 2007. He also served as team physician for the Wapakoneta High School and received a special award from the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association in 2012. He served on the Board of Directors with the Auglaize Co. MRDD, the Wapakoneta Breakfast Optimist Club, and the Wapakoneta YMCA. Tom was medical director with the St. Johns Rescue Squad, and was active in many other charitable and community projects. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Wapakoneta.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 16, 2025, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Wapakoneta, with Pastor Anthony Spearhart officiating. The family will be receive friends 11:00 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Auglaize Co. MRDD or the Auglaize Co. Crippled Children and Adults Association.
