Viola G. Koenig, 87, of Sun City, AZ, formerly of Wapakoneta, died 1:49 a.m., Sat. Jan. 8, 2022, at StoryPointe Senior Living, Troy, OH. She was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Auglaize Co., the daughter of the late William C. & Katherine (Frankenburg) Koenig.
Survivors include, a sister, Sr. Dorothy Koenig, Dayton, OH, a brother, Paul (Kathleen) Koenig, Wapakoneta, and her four legged friend, Twink.
She was preceded in death by brothers, sisters, and in-laws, William (Lucille) Koenig, Adrian (Marie) Koenig, Omer (Delores) Koenig, Bernard (Patricia) Koenig, Virgil (Sharon) Koenig, Julian Koenig, infants Cyril & Angela Koenig, and Sister Gemma Koenig.
Viola graduated in 1953 from St. Joseph High School, and received a Bachelors degree in Home Economics in 1958, from Sienna Heights College, Adrian, MI. Then in 1963, she received her Masters degree in Education from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. Viola taught home economics at St. Joseph High School, Wapakoneta, and also taught in Divine, TX. Viola worked at the Van Wert Co. as State Home Economics Agent. From there, she taught for 30 years for the University of Arizona, College of Agriculture as an Extension Economist. She then worked at St. John's Apache Co. and managed 2 offices 70 miles apart at Window Rock and Chinle Navajo American Indian Reservations. She then went to Holbrook and the Prescott, AZ area to work on the Navajo, Hopi, and Apache Reservations.
In 1975, Viola received the University of Arizona Outstanding Home Economist Award; in 1987, she was awarded Outstanding Contributions to Home Economics by the Home Economists in Extension, University of Arizona; in 1993, she received the Outstanding Service in Public Education and Community Service from the Arthritis Foundation of Arizona.
Viola loved horses and dogs, especially teacup poodles. She was known for her generosity, sense of humor, hard work, and love of life. She spent 60 years of her life in Arizona, which she absolutely loved. Viola traveled the world to Egypt, Europe, Italy, Germany, and in the United State. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Sun City, AZ. She volunteered at the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, and visiting homes to assist to the needs of the people there after retiring in 1993.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Sat. Jan. 15, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, with Rev. Jedidiah Tritle officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Wapakoneta. The family will receive family 9 a.m. – 10 a.m., Sat. Jan. 15, 2022, at the Eley Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta.
