Al and I were fraternity brothers and roommates at Dartmouth.
I enjoyed his friendship and sharp wit. I followed his professional career with admiration.
We will miss him.

Alan not only had a expert's knowledge of the Securities Act, but applied that knowledge in creative ways in the public interest.
In the 1960s, I served with Alan on the SEC staff. He was part of the senior group that guided me in the SEC's investigation of IOS/Funds of Funds. He was creative in applying the Securities Act to an unregistered foreign investment company that invested in U.S. registered investment companies.
In the 1970s, my firm represented the life insurance industry and certain individual life insurance companies with respect to fitting a new product, variable life insurance, under the federal securities laws. We approached Alan with a novel idea of disclosing how the product works by including hypothetical illustrations of premiums, death benefits and cash values in the prospectus. He was creative in recognizing the value for offerees of this novel disclosure technique and shaping the form of the illustrations for inclusion in VLI prospectuses.
A couple of years ago, Alan received the top award from an SEC alumni group. It was a time when corporate scandals like Enron had been revealed. In his acceptance speech, Alan was creative in suggesting that chief executives should be required to personally certify information about their companies. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act implements his idea.
Alan leaves a legacy of contributing to the development of the federal securities laws and, even more importantly, the creative application of those laws.

To the family of Alan B. Levenson, I will miss him. I worked with Mr. Levenson at Fulbright & Jaworski for 10 years in the Securities Group. He was very nice and a hard working man. He had a great sense of humor and I will miss his smile. My heartfelt sympathy to you and your family.

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee: and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
