Alberta D. Willenz, 85, died August 14, 2005 at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington in Rockville, Maryland, of complications from a back injury.
Mrs. Willenz was a native of New York City where she attended public schools and the City College of New York.
In Indianapolis, Indiana, where she lived for many years raising a family, Mrs. Willenz served for 10 years as co-head of the Great Books Club, where she organized readings and discussions of novels, biographies, and other literature, old and new. In Indianapolis, Mrs. Willenz also was a volunteer for the presidential campaign of Eugene McCarthy in 1968.
Mrs. Willenz moved to the Washington, DC area in 1968, where she served for a number of years as a librarian at Adas Israel Synagogue.
Mrs. Willenz was an avid traveler, visiting foreign and domestic destinations alike. She also loved nature and taking walks at the C&O Canal in Potomac, Maryland and at Wheaton Regional Park.
Mrs. Willenz's first marriage ended in divorce. She is survived by her second husband, Dr. Erik Willenz of Rockville; two sons, Joseph H. Green of Lake Worth, Florida and Eric A. Green of Arlington, Virginia; two daughters-in-law, Marcia Green of Lake Worth and Rosario F. Green of Arlington and two step-daughters, Pamela Willenz of Arlington and Nicole Gardner of Vienna, Virginia.
Graveside service Friday, August 19, 10 a.m. at King David Memorial Garden, Falls Church, VA. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, to the Rockville, MD Public Library.
