I just learned this evening of Mr. Clain's passing. Like so many others, I and my son, Kye, will remember him as someone who instilled confidence and a love of learning in the students he worked with. He was so much at the heart of Browne middle school and especially the drama and musicals! And for me, as a parent I appreciated his ability and willingness to listen. I always saw a twinkle in his eye and loved his quick wit and humor. My heartfelt condolences to Mr. Clain's family.

We were profoundly saddened to learn of Mr. Clain-Stefanelli's passing. We feel so fortunate to have known this kind educator without peer, who left our sons with a keen interest in history and the classics. “Mr. Clain's” incisive sense of humor helped put the many tragedies of young adulthood in perspective, and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Clain-Stefanelli's family.

He was a great teacher and an even better man. Middle school kids can be a real pain - my friends and I were no exception - and he not only tolerated us, but also seemed to genuinely enjoy being around us. Although most in that age range are more prone to rebellion than they are to respecting authority, you would be hard pressed to find a student of his who didn't admire appreciate him.

Mr. Clain was a calm guiding presence to our son and us, the parents, during the middle school years at Browne Academy. Our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Clain's family. - Richard and Linda Adleson (Burke, VA)

Of all of my teachers, Mr. Clain was one of the very few I remembered and so fondly (from Sheridan School). What a gentle and loving man. May his family find peace in the future.

I was very sorry to hear of Mr. Clain's passing. (He will always be Mr. Clain to me.) He was one of my favorite teachers at Maret, but more than that he provided me with some of my most treasured memories from high school days by casting me in two plays and four musicals. My senior year he cast me as the lead role (King Arthur) in "Camelot." When I saw him at the Maret centennial a few years ago, he told me the story -- I think for the first time -- about how there had been some discussion among the other members of the drama staff about cutting my big monologue in the middle of the show, because I'd been struggling with it. (It was always clear to me that I had gained this role due to my singing abilities, not my acting talents.) But he insisted that they keep it in, that I would eventually get it together, and I did. I will always be grateful to him for his confidence in me and for helping me see what I was capable of doing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was dedicated to his students and to our dramatic productions. He always had such high expectations of all of us actors, and the worst insult/criticism he could deliver was that something was "bush" (as in "bush league"), meaning that we were not comporting ourselves in a professional manner. I can still picture him literally leaping onto the stage during rehearsals to help us work through difficult moments. I will forever be grateful for what he brought to my life and to the lives of so many others. Rest in peace, Mr. C., and thanks.

I am so very saddened to hear of Mr. Clain's passing. He was my 6th grade home room and history teacher at Sheridan School in 1969 and made a wonderful and indelible impression on me that I have carried with me all these years.

Eleanor, Katherine, Elizabeth.

Alex has been one of my fondest friends since we first met in 1965. His love and knowledge of history was something he shared with me and was something that I could not share with most other friends and brothers at that time. He was also a great tennis partner and colleague on the water with the GW crew. We were together at the Jefferson Memorial the night just after Dr. King was killed, grieving and contemplating the meaning for our country and history. Inspired by the great Louis Kayser, Alex became him when he began to teach. It was his mission, like his parents, to impart knowledge to young minds. Alex was a great man. I love him. I miss him. And I shall endeavor to follow his example until I am called to see him in eternity and beyond.
