To Mr & Mrs Dixon,

Wow, I can't even begin to express how the both of you have affected my life. If it was not for the both of you I would not have gone to college and had the courage to follow my dream and become a six time all-american in track and field. Mrs. Dixon was the kindest sweetest person one could ever meet. Coach Dixon you were always super supportive and always encouraged me to push hard through adversity in my life (and Lord knows there were plenty). Coach Dixon I know you are strong and will get through the loss, take it one day at a time. May God bless you and your entire family.

Love forever and ever with the utmost gratitude,

Mr. Dixon, Delinda and Family,

I was so saddended to hear about the loss of Mrs. Dixon. I remember when I was at Coolidge in 1990, she was my computer teacher and she always had a bright SMILE on her face. I always remember saying Mrs. Dixon, I"m so glad you gave me an "A" in your class and she would say, you "earned it", I didn't give it to you. wow..memories.

Delinda, I cannot imagine your pain, but I know that your mom, was SO SPECIAL and all these dedications prove it! She will be missed. I ask GOD right now to just rap you and your family within all his blessings so that you can get through this with peace in your heart knowing she's with the Almighty. You are my Coolidge and St. Aug Family and you are in my prayers.

Mr. Dixon and family

I just wanted to say that my prayers go out to you and your family during this time of bereavement. Mrs Dixon was surely a one of a kind woman. She touched the lives of so many people and especially the students of Coolidge High who had the opportunity to meet her. Mr Dixon you were truly an inspiration to me and always encouraged me to push hard and do my best. I think at times you had more courage in me than I did myself. The two of you together were truly a force to be wreckoned with lol! The both of you had such caring hearts and enjoyed working with the students and never hesitated to go that extra mile to push for excellence in us all. My God continue to be with you and your family now and forever more.

To the Dixon family;

I would like to express my condolences at this time. Mrs. Dixon was a very special person to many people throughout her lifetime. I believe she embraced her calling and touched everyone as God instructed her to. She always had a beautiful spirit and she wanted the best for all of her students even when we did want the best for ourselves. She was very mild mannered but matter of fact. I appreciated that about her. When her and Mr. Austin tag teamed the hall or the class it was quite an experience! I am smiling because I realize that Mrs. Dixon was THE BEST computer teacher that ever graced DCPS. I am ever so thankful for all of the wisdom that she imparted upon me. I am grateful for the opportunities I have shared with her. To the family; Stay strong and find comfort in Almighty! Hold on to your memories of her and continue to press toward the mark!

God Bless!

To the Dixon family,
My prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family. I never had the pleasure of having Mrs. Dixion as a teacher however her presence was always made known on the 2nd floor. She was a very classy woman. She will be missed by many. I'm reminded of the scripture that says...We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord (2 Corin. 5:8) Mrs. Dixon is home now with her father and creator...that is indeed a blessing all by itself.

I was a member of the Coolidge Class of 1993 and although I didn't personally have Mrs Dixon as a teacher she was no less a wonderful teacher. She was very warm and friendly person and all the students loved her. I've read some of the posts here and like the entry from R. Darden. Mrs Dixon was like a mother to many while Mr. Austin was the fighter/father for us, pushing us ! Together you couldn't lose in life unless you wanted to.

I offer my condolences to the Dixon family. She may be gone in body, but she will always remain in spirit....a beautiful spirit.

She was so angelic. It was like nothing set her off. I can still see her standing in the hall softly telling us to hurry up and get out the locker. My locker just happened to be across from her class and I was always in it taking my time !!!!

Dear Mr. Dixon and Family,

We were so saddened to learn of the passing of your wife, Mrs. Alice G. Dixon. I’m sorry that I couldn’t be with you today.

Although the Class of 1997 is no longer a cohesive unit with a team of advisors to lead us, I felt it was important to try to convey to you our collective feelings about your wife.

To many of us, she was the mother we never had or always wanted. I don’t believe it would be an understatement to say that she was the nicest teacher at Coolidge – in fact, all over the internet this week, that’s exactly what most alumni have concluded. When you’re a teenager attending a school as big as Coolidge, it’s refreshing to know that somewhere on the second floor, you could seek refuge in Mrs. Dixon’s room, where she’d offer you the perfect combination of kind words, correction, and advice.

My class loved Mrs. Dixon so much that she and Mr. Jubill Austin were our only choices for class advisor. We didn’t want the same old faculty members who seemed intent on making graduations, capping ceremonies, and senior class trips their personal pageants. We wanted a teacher who would be a true advisor – someone who would allow us to become our own leaders, give us advice, and even allow us to fall down once in a while – the best way to learn how to lift ourselves up again.

Who else to lead us but the premier mother figure at Coolidge? Looking back, I believe we chose Mr. Austin for the same reasons we looked up to him as a dad. We knew Mrs. Dixon would be our nurturer but Mr. Austin would be our fighter – what a combination!

I remember a horrible falling out another teacher and I had during my senior year. It was over the Prom, of all things. As predicted, once teachers other than the ones the class of 1997 selected got involved in our affairs, it became less of a learning experience for us and more of a dictatorship. Well, Mrs. Dixon somehow got it into her head that she could mediate between this teacher and myself. She succeeded at bringing us to the table and allowing each of us to say our part. At the end of this conversation, said teacher said “And I’m still waiting for my apology, Rashid.” Of course, my response was “You’ll get your apology when I feel sorry.”

Mrs. Dixon had a look of horror, yet her mouth slowly turned into a smile which she tried so hard to hide.

“Why didn’t you just apologize to him, Rashid?” she asked.

“Like I said, Mrs. Dixon – I don’t feel sorry yet. If I ever do, I’ll say it.”

“Oh, glory…” she replied. That was pretty much her standard response any time I made her laugh or said something equally outlandish.

(I think Mrs. Dixon would be proud to know I “apologized” to that teacher six years later when I became his fraternity brother and offered him our grip for the first time.)

There are thousands more stories that can be told about Mrs. Dixon. The class of 1997 only knew her for three to four years before we all became adults and went our separate ways. I can assure you, however, that so long as any of us returned to Coolidge for a visit or to volunteer, Mrs. Dixon’s room was among the first that we visited. What was once a refuge for those of us who needed a mother between 8:45am and 3:15pm became a haven for those of us who just needed to be reminded of what it felt like to be home.

She was funny, she was friendly, she was warm, she was caring, and she was everything we could have ever needed. Her absence causes a void in our lives and we all regret not having the chance to see her just one more time to hear her soft voice.

The lessons of her life remind us of the fulfillment one can receive just for being a good person. Even though we’ve made choices in life which may make us starkly different people from Mrs. Dixon, there will always be a little bit of her inside each of us – a little which will always remind us to be nice sometimes, to be kind sometimes, and to use a softer voice sometimes. You never know when someone will need it – you never know how much that soft voice will be missed once it’s gone.

In deepest sympathy,

Rashid Darden
and the Class of 1997

Dear Mr. Dixon & the Dixon Family,
Mrs. Alice G. Dixon lived a happy and joyful life indeed and was able to live to see the growth and joys of her family and students at Calvin Coolidge High School, which she enjoyed. Although her loss is devastating, you all will have many good memories to cherish forever.

You all will gather to celebrate the life of Mrs. Dixon and to say goodbye and see you later to a dear sister, mother, wife, daughter and friend in Christ on Friday, March 6, 2009. This will not be a sad event, as it also is not a strange phenomenon to us all. Our Lord touched Mrs. Dixon and she slept… as he said suffer no more and come join your father here in heaven. “Peace Be Still Mrs. Dixon… I have prepared a place for you; I will come again and receive you unto myself… That where I am, there you may be also!”

We all have suffered at one time or another, this agonizing ordeal of losing a loved one. But we must not grieve… For grief is not necessary. God teaches us that flesh is grass; and all the glory of man is as the flower. Grass withers, and flowers fade away...but a woman that dieth in the Lord passes from death into eternal life, and so it is with our beloved Mrs. Dixon… She closed her eyes and responded to God’s call… Slipping quietly away from this life, with a silenced voice and sealed lips … Perhaps leaving most of us to wonder… Why? But as we wonder, let us force ourselves to… Remember the loving daughter... Remember the loving sister…Remember the loving friend… and last but not least… Remember the mother that shared our joys and our laughter as well as our misfortunes and our tears throughout her life… Remember the young but wise woman who died as she lived, placing her concerns for others before her own… Remember what Jesus said, “I’ll be back in a little while, daughter… I’m alright, all’s well.” How can we forget!

I thought that I would share these words with you to show how dear to my heart, my friend and former teacher, and your sister, daughter, mother and wife and loved one meant to me, and also how dear you all are as a family.

Be Blessed... and Rest in Peace Mrs. A. G. Dixon

With Love and Support

A Tribute to My Friend, My Sister

To Alice from Ollie Smith

A ready smile, a listening ear,
A shoulder on which to lean.
Thoughtful and knowledgeable
Her mind, always keen.

An affectionate smile for everyone,
Whose love impacted your life
You could but simply enter a room,
And immediately there was light.

Best friend, sister, confidant—
Peacemaker, sometimes family clown.
I always had my spirits lifted,
Whenever you were around.

You loved the Lord with all your heart,
And loved Adrian almost as much.
When he came home tired and sick from track,
You refreshed him with food and a gentle touch.

A ready hand you extended
Wherever you saw a need,
You’d turn one’s sadness into joy,
With simply a kind word or deed.

I watched as you came to terms,
With the illness that took you away
Finally you could let go
And let God’s Will come into play.

I thank you for the memories,
I thank you for the love,
I thank you for the laughter
And words of comfort that fit like a glove.

Just wanted to say I love you,
So long and take your rest.
I’ll miss you with all our heart,
But realize that God loved you best.

To Mr. Dixon and Adrian, just remember that your love one is now resting in the arms of Christ. If there is anything I could do, please contact me.
