ALICE DIGGS NULSEN (Age 93)
Alice Diggs Nulsen passed away peacefully the evening of December 17, 2022, at Woodcrest Village in New London, NH following a battle with lymphoma.
Alice was born June 30, 1929 in Dallas, Texas and spent most of her childhood in Washington, DC where she attended Holton-Arms School for Girls, graduating in 1947. She went on to McGill University, earning her bachelor's degree in 1951. She met Charles (Bob) Nulsen at a hop dance at West Point while Bob was a cadet. He proposed to her at MiraMar Castle in Trieste, Italy while he was stationed there as a Second Lieutenant. They were married October 4, 1952 in Washington, DC. They spent the next 23 years moving from Army post to Army post with his various assignments. Alice was an active volunteer with the Red Cross wherever she lived. Following Bob's retirement from active duty, they settled in Washington, DC. During this time she was active in the Trowel Garden Club where she served as president for two years in the late 1970s.
The one constant in Alice's life was Faraway, the summer home her parents had purchased in 1947 in Springfield, NH. This is where she came every summer with her children to relax between Army postings. In 1990, she and Bob retired to Faraway and made it their permanent home. Alice embraced and immersed herself in the community, serving with the Historical Society, Old Home Day, Town meetings and the Library Board of Trustees. She worked diligently to establish the Springfield Kindergarten. She joined the New London chapter of PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) International in 1995 to help young women wanting further education.
Throughout her life, Alice loved theater, concerts, entertaining family and friends, gardening and travel. Her raspberry and blueberry patches were always open to friends. She and Bob enjoyed international travel with the Dartmouth Iliad program, always keen to learn and experience a new place and culture. She will be sorely missed by her friends and family, and the Springfield community she loved so dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles K. (Bob) Nulsen, parents, Marshall R. Diggs, and Alice M. Diggs; sister Helen D. Quiggin, and brother Marshall R. Diggs, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Alice M. Nulsen and husband David Baker of St. Paul, MN; son Charles K. Nulsen III and wife JoAnn of Bethesda, MD; grandchildren Chris Masanz of St. Paul, MN, Jordan (Nulsen) McCarthy and husband Gene of New Bern, NC, Chase Nulsen of Denver, CO, Hailey Nulsen of Washington, DC, and Ramsey Nulsen of Chicago, IL.
A memorial service is planned for summer 2023 in Springfield, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Alice's name to the Springfield Library, Springfield Historical Society or PEO International.
