ALVIN GOTTLIEB Obituary

Alvin L. Gottlieb
On August 11, 2015, Alvin L. Gottlieb, a longtime resident of the Washington area, passed away peacefully at the Ingleside at King Farm assisted living facility, in Rockville, Maryland. He was 93 years old. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. During World War II, he landed in Normandy, and later, with Patton's Third Army, fought in the liberation of Metz and in the effort to contain the Nazis in the Battle of the Bulge in France. After his military service, he took advantage of the GI Bill to obtain his BA at Pennsylvania State University, followed by his LL. B. at George Washington University. After passing the District of Columbia bar, he joined the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an attorney in the early 1950's, rising to the position of Deputy Assistant General Counsel. He was a visionary and aggressive trial attorney in his tireless efforts to protect the public from the marketing of impure food and drugs. Later, nearing retirement, he brought his immense experience and knowledge to bear on training a new generation of FDA trial attorneys as effective guardians of food and drug safety. In retirement, he spent as much time as possible with his two granddaughters, and travelled widely to visit friends and relatives. He is survived by his son, Lawrence Gottlieb, daughter-in-law Victoria Gottlieb, and two granddaughters, Kristen and Karen. There will be a ceremony to place his remains in their final resting place on Wednesday, August 26 at 10 a.m. at All Souls Cemetery, 11401 Brink Road, Germantown, MD 20878. Phone: 301-428-1995.

Al Gottlieb in the 1960's was the perfect attorney for FDA's General Counsel. As an FDA technical officer I had the pleasure to work with Al on several difficult cases, and maintained close touch with Al for many years. A true professional and a good friend.

I was a member of the OGC from 1976 to 1970. Nearly 40 years later, I still vividly recall my interactions with Al, and savor his influence over my professional development. Once, when I expressed concerns about our case based on a comment by the AUSA, he looked at me and said: "Why would you listen to him -- he doesn't know any more than a cockroach!" With Al, there was no wavering on who we were there to serve. His lessons will live on for generations.

I am among a couple of generations of FDA lawyers for whom Al Gottlieb was my boss, my teacher, my mentor and my inspiration of why FDA mattered, who we were supposed to protect and how we were to present FDA cases. Once, when I was mentioning (whining) that none of my cases seemed to be without messy complications, Al retorted: "Well, Bubbe, if this was easy, we wouldn't need you. Of course your cases are complicated, those are the situations that become cases." His knowledge, his teaching, his aggressive litigation on behalf of the public's protection made us better lawyers, and so he multiplied his own good effect.
