AMELIA REMONDELLI GARDNER
Amelia Remondelli Gardner, 90 years old, died January 22, 2025, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Born September 11, 1934 in Newark, New Jersey, she graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange. While an American Studies major at Smith College in Northampton, MA, she met and married Charles S. Gardner, III. During their 70-year marriage, locations that figured prominently were northern New Jersey, Washington, DC, Eagles Mere, PA, and Beijing, China. They moved to Silver Spring, Maryland in 2014, and to Chevy Chase in October of 2024.
In addition to raising four children, Amy tutored Latin, did public opinion research polling, volunteered in her children's public schools, held leadership roles in the Smith College Club of Washington and her Smith College class, and was active in DC politics, including the Georgetown Advisory Neighborhood Commission. She completed coursework at George Washington University and graduated from Smith College as an Ada Comstock Scholar in 1990. In Eagles Mere she trained to become an EMT, was a founder of the Shade Tree Commission, and supported many local causes as a volunteer.
Amy is survived by her sister, Martha Bond McAlister, her daughters Elizabeth and Sarah (Christopher Doyle), her son Daniel (Nancy Talbot), grandchildren Boyd Gardner, Clare Doyle (Emma Koramshahi), and Andy Doyle, and several nieces and nephews. Her daughter Nancy Boyd died as a result of an unsolved homicide in 1986.
CHARLES SHOOP GARDNER, III
Charles Shoop Gardner, III, 92 years old, died on August 3, 2025, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Born September 9, 1932, he grew up in Blue Ridge Summit, PA. After high school at Saint James School in Hagerstown, MD, he spent a postgraduate year at Sherborne School in Dorset, England through the English Student Union's exchange program. He completed his baccalaureate degree at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, and later earned a Master's degree in Economics from George Washington University.
His professional roles included a first journalism job at the Newark Evening News. In Washington, DC, he covered national political issues and regulatory policies for Business Week magazine's Washington Outlook column, and was Business Week's White House correspondent during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. After several years as Washington bureau chief for McGraw-Hill publications and some interim freelance writing, he became Deputy Director of External Relations at the International Monetary Fund. He and his wife, Amelia Remondelli Gardner, taught in Beijing, China in 1990 through the IMF before spending two active post-retirement decades in Eagles Mere, PA. Charlie was an EMT with the Eagles Mere Volunteer Fire Company and devoted many volunteer hours to the Eagles Mere Tree Commission, the Borough Council, and the Eagles Mere Museum.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Letitia Gardner, his daughters Elizabeth and Sarah (Christopher Doyle), his son Daniel (Nancy Talbot), grandchildren Boyd Gardner, Clare Doyle (Emma Koramshahi), and Andy Doyle, and several nieces and nephews. His daughter Nancy Boyd died as a result of an unsolved homicide in 1986.
Amy and Charlie's use of their time, energy, and material resources demonstrated their concern for the communities they lived in. Both cared deeply—not just about their immediate surroundings, but about the broader human condition. They were avid readers and thoughtful writers, with wide-ranging interests. They cultivated lifelong friendships and they leave behind many who will miss spending time with them.
