AMY ANTONELLI Obituary

ANTONELLI AMY S. ANTONELLI (1941 - 2014) Amy Solit Antonelli lived a rich life centered on family and music. She was an accompanist, teacher, college professor and assistant dean, and a leader in Washington choral music. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and beloved friend of everyone who knew her. Dr. Antonelli died peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at her home in Kensington, Md., where she was cared for by her loving family. She was 72. As president of the Oratorio Society of Washington (today's Washington Chorus) for 18 years, she was instrumental in building it into one of America's most acclaimed symphonic choruses. She was a professor of music and assistant dean of the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at Catholic University. As rehearsal accompanist for more than 40 years with the Oratorio Society and Washington Chorus, she worked with such renowned conductors as Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonard Bernstein, Leonard Slatkin, Seiji Ozawa, Sarah Caldwell, and Sir Neville Marriner, among others. Dr. Antonelli served as rehearsal accompanist for The Washington Chorus' 1995 Kennedy Center production of the Benjamin Britten War Requiem, for which the chorus and its conductor, Robert Shafer, won a Grammy in 2000. She finished her accompanist career with Shafer's City Choir of Washington, founded in 2007. Amy Rachel Solit Antonelli was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 23, 1941 and was raised in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. She studied piano with Rose Cion and, after graduation from Midwood High School in 1958, she studied music at New York University for three years. In 1961 she married Dr. Morris Antonelli of Washington, D.C., and she finished her bachelor's degree in music at Mary Hardin-Baylor College in Belton, Tex., the following year, while her husband served in the Army Dental Corps at Ft. Hood. She received her master of music degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964, and, after moving to suburban Maryland with her husband, taught music part-time in Prince George's County public schools and at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School of Montgomery County. Dr. Antonelli joined the Oratorio Society as an alto chorister in 1965, and became a member of its board of trustees the following year. In 1971 she was named its accompanist and board president. Over the next two decades she and the society's music director, Maestro Shafer, were instrumental in building the organization into one of America's eminent symphonic choruses, producing its own productions at the Kennedy Center, touring Europe, recording, and performing dozens of times with the National Symphony Orchestra. She taught music theory at Trinity College and the Catholic University of America in the 1970s and in 1985 received a doctorate in music from Catholic's Benjamin T. Rome School of Music, where she taught theory, coordinated admissions, and was assistant dean for undergraduate studies. She also served two terms on the music panel of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Dr. Antonelli assisted conductor Murry Sidlin-then dean of the music school at Catholic-in the production of The Defiant Requiem, Verdi at Terezin, a concert-drama that memorializes an unusual event in Holocaust history-performances of the Verdi Requiem by Jewish prisoners at the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. The Defiant Requiem has been performed throughout Europe, the United States and in Jerusalem, since 2004. Dr. Antonelli was the pianist with a chamber ensemble that is part of the soundtrack for the acclaimed documentary film, also entitled The Defiant Requiem, Verdi at Terezin, which has been shown at numerous film festivals and broadcast nationally by PBS and internationally by the BBC. Dr. Antonelli served as associate artistic director and board secretary of The Defiant Requiem Foundation. Dr. Antonelli is survived by her husband, Morris, of Kensington; her son, David, his wife, Ari, and their daughters Gabrielle and Margot, all of Chevy Chase; her daughter, Erica Antonelli, and her husband, John Charles, and their daughter Raemi and son Evan, all of Chevy Chase; and her brother, Jim Solit, and his wife, Karen, of Washington, D.C. A funeral service will be held at Temple Emanuel, 10101 Connecticut Avenue, Kensington, Md., on Tuesday, March 25, at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be at Judean Memorial Gardens, and friends are invited to a reception afterwards at the family's home at 9612 Hawick Lane, Kensington. Shiva will be held at the Antonelli home Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The City Choir of Washington and The Defiant Requiem Foundation. Barbara and Sam gave us the heartbreaking news of Amy's passing, and we were deeply saddened. Amy was always so warm, welcoming and gracious whenever we saw her in Washington, and we considered her our friend, too. Morris, we also know how very much you gave of yourself this past year, and it must have been a great comfort to her.

Dear Morris, David, Erica and Jim, I am so sorry that I could not make the services for dear Amy,but I understand that it was beautiful. How could it be anything but, it was about Amy! We adored Amy from the time she was 14. When our Amy was born, I told Amy Solit that if Amy Levine grew up to hall of what she was, beautiful, bright , talented, personable etc . I would be thrilled. We cherished our friendship with the Solits and the Antonellis. The world is a much poorer place without Amy's rich gifts. We will love her forever, Maxine G Levine

Morris, Jeff and and I deeply saddened to hear of Amy's passing while we were away. Amy never knew how much she meant to me and touched my life. She is an inspiration to me still, as I recall her radiant smile, lively eyes, encouraging words -- brings tears to my eyes as I write this. As I read these moving testimonies to how she touched so many of us, indeed she lived her life well and was rewarded amply by loving family and rewarding career filled with music. Much love to you and your family.

Amy & the Solit family was so much a part of my early life. Where to begin - Amy was a torch, she led the way, most of all, like her parents, funny! Made us all laugh. Her dad was the trusted family friend who wrote the letter that got me into college. Her mom was a peach -ironic, funny & truthful. Blaze onward, Amy, you are so loved. Special love to you, Jimmy & regards and condolences to all.

We are so saddened at the news that our dear Amy has died. We both have such strong recollections of her, so strong, talented, vibrant and alive. She helped brighten our lives, and the lives of so many others. We knew her from Oratorio Society of Montgomery County days, the excitement of Bernstein's MASS performances, and the many times tht she played piano at our house for performances of oratorios and operas. She was a unique blend of ability and spirit. Lois and Tom Schwab

Morris and family, Amy was "my Anna" in the King and I at Alamar in 1953. We spent
2 weeks rehearsing and quite frankly she was terrific. Years later (maybe 30, maybe 40, she was in new York and we had a lovely lunch. She told me that play was a turning point in her life and her career was going to be music, etc. etc. and so forth. I am deeply sadden that she has passed, but very few in this life can say they did exactly what they wanted -- career wise, family-wise --a LIFE Worth Living. A great lady.

Knowing Amy was such a joy as she emanated joy wherever she was. It was a pleasure to make music with her for many, many years singing with Robert Shafer and having Amy accompany with The City Choir. Our condolences for all her family and friends. She was a special jewel. I remember her extending her hand to me at the last concert she attended and the one dedicated to her. She was always concerned for those around her. Amy, you meant so much to all of us.

Amy and I were best friends from elementary school on. She was my ray of sunshine and my soul sister. Although we spent our adult years living 3,000 miles apart, when together the years melted away and we remained the giggling, fun loving girls we were.
I'll love her forever.

I will be forever grateful to Dr. Antonelli for the simple act of comforting my heart and easing my fears as I left my only child at CUA in 1997 too begin her undergraduate work. Tiny as Dr. Antonelli was she was an immense source of light, faith and courage. Her brilliant career accomplishments will live through those she taught and assisted as long as there is music. Thank you, and God bless and comfort her family. --Jean Melilli, Stockbridge, Georgia

Amy was so kind to me and she and Morris even let me stay at their home when we were working on the CUA School of Music's reaccreditation project. She worked so hard to make it possible for the school's students to go to Terezin to sing and to keep track of them while they were there (with Morris of course), and I remember that when Dean Murry Sidlin had the idea for the President's Festival and multiple concerts that he knew he could count on Amy to make everything happen. It was a beautiful thing to see. She did it all with such grace and humility, seeming effortlessness. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. This is an untimely, enormous loss.

Amy was a wonderful mentor and an amazingly generous colleague. She used to mention how she accompanied for the premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Mass. How delighted I was (and so was she when I told her) to see a letter from her in the Leonard Bernstein Collection at the Library of Congress. It's wonderful that she will live on in our memories as well as in a spectacular collection dedicated to American music history. You were so good to us all.....

March 24, 2014

Morris, My profound sympathies to you and the rest of the family. I can only imagine what the pain of her loss must be for all of you. I hope that you will find some comfort in the days to come from the outpouring of sympathy and the shared memories from the many people whose lives she impacted. The most enduring image I have and will keep is Amy's smiling face. It was pure joy to be in her company.
