ANNE MacLEOD Obituary

ANNE SCOTT MacLEOD
Anne Scott MacLeod, 84, professor emerita in the College of Information Services at the University of Maryland, College Park, died at her home in Annapolis, Maryland on March 10, 2015, after several years of fighting cancer.  Professor MacLeod served her College, her University, and her academic community in several capacities: as an internationally recognized professor of children's literature, as Dean of the College, and as Acting Director of Libraries for the entire University of Maryland System. Early in her career, she was twice named as University Distinguished Professor. She was President of the International Research Society for Children's Literature, leading the society's conferences in the Spain, France, Russia (USSR), Finland, Sweden and UK. Anne MacLeod was a graduate of the University College of University of Chicago, and the University of Maryland where she earned the MLS and PhD (History) degrees. Her doctoral dissertation, "A Moral Tale", is still used internationally as a basic resource in children's literature courses. The book's innovative questions about an authors' ethical, religious and economic positions and purposes in this often didactic literature, opened new assessments of the academic and intellectual significance of books for children. In her community of Oyster Harbor, near Annapolis, she served as the Vice President and President. She also was on the board of the biological research firm, Biospherics, Inc., for several years.  Anne MacLeod leaves her husband, Norman, a sister, Barbara (Gordon) Murdock, of Saint Paul, MN, their three sons, Alec (Beverly) of Orange, MA, Daniel of Galesville, MD, and Alan (Mary) of Annapolis, MD, a fourth son, David Connor, and three grandchildren, Sean (Sarah), Hank and Carter Anne. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 1 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis.

We will miss the irreplaceable Anne very much. She was so bright, engaging, humorous and lovely in all ways. We are very sorry that events separated us over the last too many years. We will always remember the wonderful times with Anne, Norm, their kids and ours in Annapolis on the Bay. We deeply appreciate and value the many wonderful years we shared together.

Anne was my older sister, my oldest friend, a loving guide and mentor as I grew up, and even in my adult years. We are now in a silent, one-way conversation, where I tell her about a recent play or concert, a new book she'd enjoy, or the rare slow and lovely coming of spring in our wintry state. I wish for, but expect no answer. I miss her dearly.
