Anthony Steinhauser Obituary

STEINHAUSER ANTHONY JOSEPH STEINHAUSER Anthony Joseph Steinhauser of Alexandria, Virginia, born August 25, 1919 in Richmond Hill, New York passed away on Monday, November 8, 2010 at the age of 91. Beloved husband for 60 years to the late Ellen W. Steinhauser and adored brother of the late Rose C. Steinhauser. He is survived by his daughter, Lore C. Steinhauser; son, Peter A. Steinhauser and his wife, Barbara, and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily; sister-in-law, Lore W. McCarthy, and nieces and nephews, Monica, Christopher, Paul and Lorraine McCarthy; and brother-in-law, Peter Wallburg and his wife Catarina, and nephews, Billy and Michael. A U.S. Army combat veteran of WWII, he was re-activated to the Korean War as an intelligence officer and then went on to become a successful oil industry executive followed by many years of faithful government service. He developed and maintained an interest in foreign affairs after his military service and private sector postings overseas in the Phillippines and Europe for Caltex and other petroleum industry interests. Tony, as he was known to his family and friends, was a proud graduate of Richmond Hill High School and Fordham University where he was President of the Student Body and Captain of the Swim Teams. After graduation, he entered the executive training program at the Colgate-Palmolive Company but entered Officers Candidate School at the beginning of WWII. He served proudly with the 83rd Infantry "Thunderbolt" Division in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and served with distinction in ground combat in France, in Belgium, the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge and the Bridgehead over the Elbe River. The 83rd Infantry Division was recognized as a liberating unit by the U.S. Army's Center of Military History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1993. Service to his country remained among Tony's proudest accomplishments and he exemplified the values of duty, honor, God and country that are hallmarks of "the Greatest Generation". He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring and a private service will be held on Friday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. In lieu of flowers, the family requests your thoughts and prayers for all members of the armed forces past and present and for our beloved husband, father and friend, Tony.
