Anthony J. "Tony" Steinmeyer, age 81 of Arlington, VA, died of complications associated with pneumonia on April 7, 2024. Tony was born in Springfield, IL and grew up in Rolla, MO. where he was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was a summer camp director at Camp Arrowhead, Marshall, MO. After graduation from Rolla High School, he attended The College of William and Mary and served as cadet commander of the college's Army ROTC brigade. Graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1964, he went on to Harvard Law School where he received his law degree in 1967. Admitted to the bar in New York he worked briefly at Royall, Koegel & Rogers Law Firm in New York City before serving 1968-1969 as an officer in the U.S. Army. His tour of duty in the Army was with the logistics support unit of the Comptroller's Office in Thailand.
Tony worked for 45 years in the United States Department of Justice (1970-2015), in the Civil Division. He supervised district court litigation and served on the Civil Division's Appellate Staff. His responsibilities included a wide range of cases in the thirteen U.S. Courts Of Appeals, and many Supreme Court cases, including those involving ownership of President Nixon's tapes and publication of the Pentagon papers. He often taught classes at the DOJ's National Advocacy Center. His final position was Assistant Director, Appellate Staff.
In addition to teaching law courses, Tony was active playing tennis, studying Shakespeare, and gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Steinmeyer of Rolla, MO, and his late wife Susan Crawford Steinmeyer of Arlington, VA. He is survived by his sister Margy Steinmeyer Taylor and husband Gustavo Marin; his nephew Bryan Taylor and wife Jessica Taylor, and great-nephew Jackson Taylor, all of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by his aunt Violeta Gleason of Aiken, SC and many cousins and good friends.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Tony's Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Vinson Hall Chapel, 6251 Old Dominion Dr., McLean, VA 22101.
