Anthony John Thompson (Age 81)

Anthony John "Tony" Thompson, Boynton Beach, FL, formerly Bethesda, MD, passed away peacefully in his Boynton Beach home on May 31, 2022. Tony, of Thompson & Pugsley, PLLC, Washington, DC, was born January 5, 1941 in Washington, DC to John W. Thompson and Muriel Gill Webb.



Tony attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. where he was an All-Met point guard and member of the tennis team, then attended Princeton University where he was an active member of the Cannon Club and the Air Force ROTC before graduating Magna Cum Laude. Following Princeton, he went on to Charlottesville, VA where he ultimately graduated from the University of Virginia with his law degree.



Tony served in the Air Force for 4 years as a Captain in the JAG Corp and was stationed in Great Falls Montana before receiving a posting is Southeast Asia, Korat Thailand. Following his service, he had a distinguished law career starting with the Federal Communications Commission. Tony would become a partner at firms Hamel Park, Perkins Coie and Shaw Pitman in Washington D.C. He ultimately opened his own practice, Thompson & Pugsley PLLC where he was known to be the preeminent environmental law attorney working with associations such as the American Mining Congress and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission where he represented much of the United States uranium production.



Tony had the honor of serving as an advance man for President Gerald Ford in 1975-76 then on to serve as a lead advance man for George H. W. Bush in 1980 and Reagan–Bush in 1984. He was a member of Washington D.C.'s Alfalfa Club which he enjoyed annually. He was also a proud member of the Chevy Chase, Metropolitan, Gulf Stream Bath & Tennis and Delray Dunes Clubs. Those who knew Tony knew his passion for the many boards he served on, Redskins football, rock-n-roll music, tennis, golf, his family and friends.



Tony is survived by his two children, Nicole T. Vereen of Alpharetta, GA and Anthony J. Thompson, Jr. of Bethesda, MD; two sisters Joan Koehler and Betsy Young; and five grandchildren, Declan and Chase Vereen and Skyler, Colten and Beckham Thompson. He was predeceased in 2015 by his beloved wife Jacqueline Anne Thompson.



Family and friends are welcome to a Memorial Service at All Saints Church, Chevy Chase, MD on Tuesday, June 14, at 12 noon, followed by a celebration of Tony's life at Chevy Chase Club. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital – a charity that is near and dear to the family.

Dear Marcia,
We are so sorry for your loss. Tony was one of a kind, a true gentleman, and a rock star kinda guy. We only had the opportunity to know him recently, and we loved his true kindness and joie de vive. He will truly be missed by all at The Dunes.
