ARLENE BUARQUE de MACEDO Obituary

BUARQUE de MACEDO ARLENE S. BUARQUE de MACEDO Arlene S. Buarque de Macedo, real estate investor, engineer, and entrepreneur, died on November 1, 2021 at age 84. Born in New York as World War II was about to break out, Arlene spent her early formative years playing the accordion, in the Bronx. As the War drew to a close, she moved with her family to the suburbs of Washington D.C., where her father opened a grocery store, known for its rotisserie chicken and special seasoning. After graduating Calvin Coolidge High School, Arlene went on to study mathematics at George Washington University where she met the love of her life, Pete, over an unknown in their Chemistry class. When they graduated college, they were quickly married, and remained happily so for the next five and a half decades. Arlene continued her graduate school studies in mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. She left Pennsylvania to work at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, where Arlene worked on the Apollo project and calculated trajectories for the moon shot. As she raised her three sons, Steven, Michael and Charley, she continued her education at the Catholic University of America, where she received her Masters in aerospace engineering. Thereafter, she earned her real estate license and started a successful business, investing in real estate in Maryland and Washington, D.C. She spent the next 40 years in the real estate business and was a pillar in the community in Bethesda, Maryland. She is survived by her sons Steven and Charley, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 8, 2021, 8:30 a.m. at Torchinsky Hebrew Funeral Home, 254 Carroll St. NW, Washington, DC. Interment following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Buarque de Macedo Family STEM Scholarship fund which was set up earlier at The Catholic University of America c/o CUA Division of Advancement, O'Connell Hall E200, 620 Michigan Ave NE, Washington DC 20064 (202-319-6910 or [email protected] or giving.cuatoday.com).giving.cuatoday.com).

Today (Jan 24, 2022) we just learned to Arlene's passing. A fine and gentle woman, a confidant and mentor to my wife. We are deeply saddened by this belated news of her death. A good wife, mother, and grandmother. We miss her. Our condolences.

Arlene and Pete were treasured friends of my late husband, Chick Montrose, and me. In our young days, Arlene and I spent happy hours at Loehmann´s (now closed forever) helping one another find chic outfits at bargain prices to wow folks at Catholic University events. We remained friends till the end, consoling each other through losses of dear ones and visiting when we could, which-sadly-became rare since we lived far apart. My deepest sympathy to Arlene´s family. I think of her with affection and always will!
