ARTHUR D. KALLEN  
Arthur Donald Kallen of Arlington, VA, died of pancreatic cancer on June 1, 2016. Born in Chicago on April 27, 1927, to Earle Glen and Hazel Karlsberg Kallen, he served in the US Navy at the tail end of World War II and went to college on the GI Bill, graduating from the University of Chicago with a Masters degree in political science. During his career in government service, which he began in 1951 as a Management Intern in the Navy Department, Art served as Deputy Division Chief in the Bureau of the Budget, as Director of the Office of Budget and Finance in the Treasury Department, and as a Legis Fellow in the office of Florida''s Senator Lawton Chiles. In 1980 he received the Meritorious Presidential Rank Award.His interests were many and varied: the arts (especially theater), political memorabilia, Gilbert and Sullivan, Sherlock Holmes, travel, photography, archaeology, and zoos. A man of almost infinite patience, he was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs until he lost patience at age 85 and switched to the Washington Nationals.Art was a dedicated volunteer, serving on the Arlington Civil Service Commission for 22 years, 10 of them as Chair; as Treasurer for six years of the Arlington Arts Center; President (1990-91) and Board member of the American Association for Budget and Program Analysis; and Treasurer of the Treasury Department Historical Association.He completely loved and was loved by his family: his wife of 62 years, Vivian Kallen (née Margaris); his son Jeffrey and wife Margaret and their extended family, including Art''s granddaughter Esther N�� Dhonnacha and great-granddaughter Sophia in Dublin, Ireland; son Gregory and his daughter Alicia and son Seth of Big Stone Gap, VA; Vivian''s extended family in Athens, Greece; and his brother Roger of San Francisco.A celebration of Art''s life will be held on August 9, 2016 at the Arlington Arts Center. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Arlington Community Foundation, memo line Arthur and Vivian Kallen Fund for the arts, 818 North Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22203.
