BEATRICE TORMEY DOBIE  
On January 4, 2014, Beatrice Tormey Dobie died in her sleep after suffering a stroke in her home in Indianapolis. Born in Syracuse, New York on March 6, 1922, Bea graduated from the University of Toronto in 1945 and moved to New York City to start a 38-year career with Time, Inc. She worked for both Time and LIFE magazines and was a founding executive of Time-LIFE Books. She was instrumental in choosing Alexandria as its new headquarters in 1976. She served as chief of research and ended her career as vice president and director of personnel.After retiring in 1982, Bea volunteered with Good Shepherd Catholic Church and Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services. She participated in the Serendipity and Ventures in Community Bible groups and formed many cherished friendships through them. She is survived by her brother's seven children, Kathleen, Maureen (Michael Goldfarb), Chris (Anna), Jennifer, Natalie, Fred, and Julia Dobie; their eleven children, a great niece and nephew, as well as dozens of loving relatives and friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309 with a reception to follow.Memorial donations may be made to Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services, P.O. Box 15096, Alexandria, VA 22309 (www.goodhousing.org) and Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street, Watertown, NY 13601 (www.jeffersonhospice.org).
