Colonel Broadus Bailey, Jr., US Army (Retired) of Falls Church, VA, age 95, died on September 28, 2025.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Betsy) Mathewson Bailey; two sons: Dr. Michael M. Bailey (Kathryn), John B. Bailey, and one daughter, Dr. Rebecca B. Wright (Michael Berrigan), and five grandchildren. Colonel Bailey was a native of Greenville, SC, the son of Broadus Bailey and Rebecca Furman Bailey.

After graduating from Princeton University on June 12, 1951, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant of Field Artillery, USAR. He was appointed to the Regular Army in 1955.

His assignments included duty as a battery commander in the 82nd Airborne Division, aide-de-camp to MG W. P. Ennis, Jr. at Allied Forces Central Europe, ROTC instructor at Harvard College, sector advisor in Vietnam, the Army general staff (International Policy Division, ODCSOPS), battalion command in Germany, Army Attaché to Laos, East Asia Bureau of the US Department of State, and staff supervisor of the Defense Attaché System in East Asia (DIA). He retired in 1980 to join the Republican staff of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. He resigned in 1984.

COL Bailey graduated from The Lawrenceville School; Princeton University (1951, A.B.); George Washington University (1964, M.A.); the US Army Field Artillery School; the US Naval Command and Staff Course; and the US Army War College.

His awards included the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Defense Meritorious Service Award, the Combat Infantry badge, the Senior Parachutist badge and two Air Medals.

There will be a private burial service at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Goodwin House Foundation, 3440 S. Jefferson St., Falls Church, VA 22041 or to a charity of your choice.
