Carl Schultz Obituary

Passed away at home on January 8, 2024, in the loving care of his two daughters along with the compassionate assistance of Hospice of the Panhandle. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 16, 1939, as the first child of Carl Donaldson Schultz II and Elsie Jones Schultz, Carl and his parents moved to Washington, DC, in the early 1940s. Carl spent the rest of his childhood there, attending Anacostia High School while enriching his education with numerous truant days spent exploring Smithsonian museums until his graduation in 1958. Next, Carl matriculated at George Washington University, where he majored in Foreign Affairs. Carl began his service in the Marine Corps Reserves (Third Battalion, Platoon 353) in 1962 alongside his younger brother, Ken. During college, Carl immensely enjoyed his association with Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and later attended reunions and kept in touch with many PiKAs -until as late as 2019; exclaiming often, "I've fallen and I can't reach my beer!" Immediately upon graduation from GW, Carl married the love of his life, Maria Christina "Stina" Holm, originally of Helsinki, Finland, in June of 1962. After a short stint working for the Department of Labor and attending graduate school at GW, Carl embarked on what would end as a successful thirty-two-year career with the State Department's United States Information Agency, first as a foreign service officer and later working with the Fulbright Scholarship Program, as a career counselor and as an inspector for the Inspector General's Office. Carl's first assignment in the Foreign Service was in Bogota, Colombia, where his wife and two young daughters joined him from 1966 to 1968. Carl loved South America and was delighted to return there with his family to serve as public affairs officer, cultural attache, and in various other capacities in Brazil: Porto Alegre 1971, Brasilia 1971-1973, and Recife 1973-1975. True to form, he thoroughly explored the culture, arts, language, music, and history of all these cities and environs. Beginning in 1975, Carl began the second phase of his career inside the Beltway while his girls attended Montgomery County schools. He was thrilled to be able to return regularly to his beloved museums, libraries, and theaters near his office downtown.
In 1995, Carl retired and he and Stina moved full time to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Carl was active with his local chapter of Keep America Beautiful and served on the board of the Jefferson County Public Service District. He continued to pursue his lifelong interest in photography, culminating in exhibits and publications.
Carl and Stina were married for sixty-one years until Stina's death on July 7, 2023. Carl was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Kenneth McKnight Schultz and Steven Taylor Schultz. He is survived by his daughters Lisa Schultz Matens and Jennifer Schultz; his grandchildren Geoffrey Barnes (Ben Dille), Will (Victoria) Allen, Melanie (Dan) Chelius, Maria Allen, John Barnes, and Anna Allen; and many in-laws and nieces and nephews on both the Schultz and Holm sides.
A joint Celebration of Life for both Carl and Stina Schultz will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2024. Please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an enterprise Carl supported with passion in his later years.

I met Carl when I first joined USIA. What a kind and gentle soul. We worked on and off together through this career when he was in Washington. He was always soft spoken and never had an unkind word for anyone. He was a great officer. I am truly sorry for your loss.

I lived in a fraternity house along with Carl at GWU. Although I never saw him after graduation (I didn't attend any of the fraternity reunions) and spoke to him via telephone only once in all the following years, I remember this: He (and his wife) were smart, funny and interesting. I have always regretted not staying in touch with him.
