LADD CAROL LEE BOWMAN LADD Dog Breeder ~ Doll Maker Carol Lee Bowman Ladd, 89, of Poolesville, MD, died June 27, 2011 at her apartment in the Aspenwood Senior Living Center, Silver Spring, MD of abdominal cancer. Mrs. Ladd was a breeder of chocolate Labrador retrievers and Arabian horses. Several of her Labrador retrievers earned their American Field Trial Grand Championships. She was a founder of the Sugarland Searchers Doll Club of Maryland in 1986. Her other interests included photography, genetics and genealogy. She had been a Poolesville resident since 1967. Carol Lee Bowman was born in 1922 in Oakland, CA, to Charles L. Bowman and Lucile W. Sleeper. At age 12 her family moved to Larchmont, N.Y. She received a bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences in 1943 from Cornell University. She met her future husband, Robert Daniel Ladd, at Cornell. They married in October 1943. After WW II, they moved to Tulsa, OK and then to the Washington, DC area, settling in Alexandria, VA, Potomac, MD and finally to their farm "Haverhill" in Poolesville, MD. Her memberships included the Cornell Club of Washington; Congressional Country Club in Bethesda; the Potomac Hunt Club; the Seneca Valley Pony Club of Montgomery County; and the St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Poolesville. Survivors include five children, Robin L. McEntire of Silver Spring, R. Daniel Ladd Jr. of Bethesda, Merle L. Silverman of Foster City, CA, retired Army Col. Charles B. Ladd of Douglasville, GA, and Phebe L. Mertes of Helotes, TX; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, MD is handling the arrangements. A memorial reception will be held on July 16, 2011 at St. Peter's Fellowship Hall in Poolesville, MD. Hilton Funeral Home, Barnesville, MD is handling the arrangements. I am grateful to have known Carol and owned a beautiful pup that achieved Master Hunter status...one of the first female chocolates to do so. My condolences go out to your family.
