Carolyn Reeder Obituary

CAROLYN O. REEDER
Of Glen Echo, Md., died January 20, 2012, after a short illness. She was 74. A Washington, D.C. native with degrees in music and education from American University, Carolyn taught at Georgetown Day School for 29 years before becoming a popular author of children's literature.  Carolyn wrote 10 historical novels for young readers, including Shades of Gray, which won the Scott O'Dell award for historical fiction and other honors. She also contributed articles on the experiences of children in the Civil War to the Washington Post's KidsPost. Invited to speak at middle and elementary schools around the United States, she enjoyed talking to young people about her books and sharing her passion for the history that inspired them. When asked why she wrote historical fiction, she explained, "I enjoy the research. Children stare at me in disbelief when they hear that, but the research is my excuse to talk to people I wouldn't otherwise meet, to take excursions to places that are off the beaten track, and to read in depth on fascinating subjects - and to call it "work.'" A birdwatcher and wildflower enthusiast, Carolyn had a deep appreciation for the natural world. She and Jack, her husband of 52 years, hiked hundreds of miles in national parks across the country. She had a special affection for the C & O Canal, where she took regular walks along the tow path, and for Shenandoah National Park, where she and Jack were responsible for maintaining a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The Reeders co-authored three books about the history and founding of the Shenandoah National Park and collaborated on an annotated collection of Civil War letters written by William C.H. Reeder, an Indiana foot soldier.  Carolyn is survived by her husband Jack; son David and granddaughters Liz, Cristina, and Roxy; daughter Linda and son-in-law Chris Anderson; and many dear friends. A memorial service will be held on February 25 at 2 p.m. in the Glen Echo Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the C&O Canal Association or to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club.

I like to read and look at entries about my grandmother online and i came accross this site and found it touching how much people cared about her. She was an amazing women... and an even more amazing grandmother to me and my sisters. I am the oldest and i can't even measure how much advice and stories she told me. I will never forget them. Today marks 2 months of her being gone and not a day goes by that i dont miss her, love her and think of her. Its so nice to see the sweet things people have wrote about her and hear what they say about her. Thank you everyone.

I am shocked and saddened by Carolyn's passing. I have loved her books, using them in my classroom for many years and sharing them with my nieces and nephews. I even spent many happy hours exploring a variety of locations on the C&O Canal because of Carolyn's books. I had the opportunity to spend time with Carolyn at several children's literature events, and I was thrilled to be able to discuss books and history and writing and life with Carolyn. You have my deepest sympathy, and Carolyn will always have my deepest respect.

I read with great sadness in the KidsPost about Carolyn's passing. I am so sorry. Carolyn visited Loudoun Country Day School for a number of years and spoke with our 5th Grade about her book, Shades of Gray, which they read every year as part of their Civil War unit. Carolyn related so well to the children, sharing her great love of research and writing and encouraging them in theirs. We will miss her greatly.

I was stunned to hear today of Carolyn's death. We have known each other for many years, through the Book Guild and our visits to Missouri for the Children's Literature Festival in Warrensburg. Carolyn will be in my thoughts for many years. I am very saddened by her loss.
