TSENG CATHERINE CHING-HSUAN TSENG (Fang) Catherine Ching-Hsuan Tseng (Fang) of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on October 7, 2016 at the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson, AZ from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Dr. Hsiang Neng Tseng. Mrs. Tseng was born in the late spring of 1921 in Nanjing, China, the seventh daughter of Fang Huanjing and Zhang Jingwan. She grew up in Tianjin, China with two older brothers, two younger sisters, and three younger brothers. She is survived by four of her siblings. Mrs. Tseng graduated from Nankai Girls High School in Tianjin, China in 1937, then continued her education at Yanjing University in Beijing, China, where she obtained her degree in nursing in 1940. Catherine, like all of her classmates at Peking Union Hospital decamped to west China during the war years. She worked as a nurse at the West China University Hospital in Chengdu, China until 1945. After the war, Mrs. Tseng received a scholarship to study in the United States, arriving in 1947. She subsequently earned a master's degree in public health nursing from Columbia University. While in New York, she met a fellow Chinese student, Dr. Hsiang Neng Tseng, whom she married in 1952. Mrs. Tseng worked at the Montgomery County Health Department as a public health nurse with the Head Start Program from 1973 until her retirement in 1986. After retirement, she volunteered with several organizations in Montgomery County dedicated to improving the health and well-being of recent Chinese immigrants. In addition, she volunteered with the DHHS Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, earning an award for her service from President Clinton. She was an active member of the Chinese Club of Leisure World, the Evergreen Senior Citizens Club, and the Chinese Bible Study Group of Leisure World. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Tseng is predeceased by her stepson, Dr. Stanley Sze-Chuen Tseng, one younger brother, and two younger sisters. She is survived by her three children, Florina Tseng of Shrewsbury, MA, Jennifer Tseng of Lafayette, CO, and Conrad Tseng (Carmel Giles) of Denver, CO. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Bryon Tseng, Emily Tseng, Caroline Casey, Walker Evan Casey, and Catherine Rose Tseng. A Memorial Service to commemorate Catherine's life will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Inter-Faith Chapel, 3680 Leisure World Drive, Silver Spring, MD. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the name of the deceased to the Chinese Culture and Community Center (
