He was a mentor and friend. One of the finest men I've ever known and I always enjoyed our times together sharing army aviator stories. He led the path that I have tried to follow, living a life honorably among your true peers. I will miss him so much.

My personal recollection of you and Peggie, our Sorority Sister, at FAMU, followed by your commendable service in the US Army, where our paths often crossed, is sadden by your untimely departure. At the request of the remaining members of your 1953-54 FAMU Track Team: Oliver Gross, Emmanuel Crandford, Willie Daniels, Ben Vorner, Charles Fields, Roy Bell, and John "Bo" Arnold; in the absence of Benny "Rat" Thomas, Rudolph Laverty, Felton Kemp, James Moore, and Sal Gaitor, all deceased, I wish your Family the best and God's blessings, in their future endeavors. Janet and Family, it was an honor to know Col Deshields, whose life accomplishments shall serve as eternal inspiration to me and so many others. May you find comfort in knowing Jesus did not come to make suffering disappear, but to fill it with His presence through the Holy Spirit and Family and Friends that Love You!

To the DeShields Family, you have our deep and sincere sympathy. I knew and served with Charles in the military where he will be remembered as a highly decorated soldier, a comrade and close friend. I also knew him in the Retired Military Officers Association (RMOA). There he was a hard worker and supporter of our association goals. We knew many mutual friends and kept each other up to date on their whereabouts. He will be missed and he will be long remembered.
