My family has known Chas since he was a young boy coming to Eastern Market. He worked for us and he was a good employee always polite to everyone. Casey & Tim you both did a good job raising Chas. I never met his wife but I am sure she is a good person if Chas fell in love with her. Rest In Peace Chas.

Sending heartfelt condolences to Chas' beloved wife, Youmi, and to his loving parents, Casey and Tim Gunter, and to his friends dating back to Super Tots, St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Capitol Hill (where Chas was a Shepherd in the children's Nativity scene), Peabody Elementary, Hobson Middle, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Howard University, and the United States Army.

May Chas live on for ever in the hearts of all those who know him and love him. May fond memories help to ease the pain of loss. May all who mourn for Chas know the Peace that only God can give. May the Lord of Light and Life be your strength in the days, months, and years ahead. When you can't, be assured that God can. And, may the Lord grant you His Peace.

With our deepest sympathy,
~ Dr. Jessica & Audri Cabness

My condolences to his family. I met Chas while attending Howard University. He was a giving person and always wanted to know as much about the trumpet as he could. I remember sitting in Mr. Irby's office with Chas listening to Clifford Brown Live at the Beehive album for hours.
REST IN PEACE

It was truly an honor to serve with Chas. He was fun and funny on an every day basis. He was always that guy who would have a minute to stop and talk even when we were both on the run to a gig or a meeting. I am truly sorry for this loss and I hope his family finds some peace in knowing he was so appreciated.

We got to meet Chas as a young Soldier in Korea nearly 20 years ago and he really made an impression. Such a great guy. Such a sense of humor!! He always kept us laughing but with that subdued half smile. And so talented-what a trumpet player!! Our hearts go out to his family, we are so very sorry for the loss of Chas.

Chas was just TOO awesome for words. It would impossible not to love this guy. Got jokes for days and was a roast master. Equally he was an AMAZING Soldier who took his job as a musician and leader seriously. He never left you guessing. Chas, RIP brutha.
