I couldn't believe it yesterday when I read in the Gonzaga newsletter that the great Chris Flannery was gone. He was my favorite teacher during my time at Gonzaga. I still think about him all the time and can still remember many of his corny jokes ("What have you done for me lately!?")
I will never forget that he and Mike Howell drove two hours to attend my Father's funeral during my junior year.
There was only one Chris Flannery; he was the best, and will be missed.

Mr. Flannery was the first teacher I said hello to at Gonzaga and the last to receive my farewell. To us his students he was a true friend amongst the faculty. Mr. Flannery embodied what a teacher, musician, man, and human being should be.

Those who knew and loved Chris will remember him fondly as a teacher, mentor, leader of the Highest Order, and most importantly, as a friend. More than a musician, he was an extraordinary band director, composer, and talented percussionist, though you would never hear him say so. He dedicated his life to raising young men in the Jesuit tradition and creating, through discipline, planning, laughter and coffee, a nationally recognized award-winning music program, which he grew out of a basement to its own facility over the course of his career. To know Chris Flannery was to be transformed by his wisdom, kindness and never-ending generosity of spirit.

I had Mr. Flannery for music at Gonzaga. He taught me a ton and I still use some of his unique phrases. He was just soooo cool.

We are so terribly saddened by the news of Mr. Flannery's passing. Our son Danny's life was changed forever during his time at Gonzaga 1998-2002. Mr. Flannery was a true gentleman, scholar, educator, and friend to our son and all the boys who had the pleasure of being a part of his life. He will always hold a special place in our hearts and we will be forever grateful for the gifts he so unselfishly gave to make our son the man he is today. Please accept our sincere condolences and may Mr. Flannery play beautiful music in Heaven with the Angels. With much love, Dan & Mary Kasmierski

The best musician. A passion for education. I loved taking classes from him. He will be missed. It will take a supernatural act for a suitable replacement to be found. I am not sure the music program at Gonzaga will ever be the same. He truly was one of the greatest aspects of attending Gonzaga. May he rest in peace.

Mr. Flannery was the first teacher my son met at Gonzaga and he spent every day with him in his beloved 8th period band class. Mr. Flannery was always there for Jack and went to bat for him many times. I ache for these boys who have lost their mentor and their friend. They will carry on Flan's love of music and they will miss him deeply. He taught them so much, in so many ways. He made them the best Men for Others that they could be. May he rest in peace.

I was a member of the Gonzaga Wind and Liturgical Ensembles from 1998-2002, and while I credit him for making me a better musician, it would be negligent of me to omit his contributions towards making me a better man for others.
Thanks for everything, Flan, and make sure heaven stays on beat up there, will ya? Take care, friend.

Chris was a wonderful man and a great teacher and mentor to the young men at Gonzaga. He will be irreplaceable. I accompanied him on two band trips and was privileged to enjoy his intelligence, wit, and great heart; not to mention the excellent music. He will be mourned and missed by hundreds of past students. Thanks for all you did for Gonzaga and my son, Ryan.
