CRAIG HAMMERBERG Memoriam

CRAIG HAMMERBERG
Dear Craig,  I can't believe this has happened, can you? At 34, cancer took you away from me, from all of us. It was gruesome. Rare, aggressive, terminal - all words we said this past year. A vocabulary I wish we never learned.  To say you will be missed is the understatement of a lifetime ... of my lifetime. I want the world to see how incredible you are. I have decided to share some words you wrote in your journal, so they all know you yourself were remarkable... up to the very last moment.  "As death often does, it causes me to reflect on my inadequacies. My memories replay in my head, and I find myself thinking about the opportunities I have had (so many!) and the ones I let pass me by (too many).  There is a world I have never seen, people I have never met, and memories I will never make. This reminds me that I should keep living as long as I can with a sense of urgency.. I've forgotten this a lot in my day-to-day grind, but dying reminds me to cherish what I have. Our lives should be as full as possible. We should live urgently. We should always remember we have been able to continue living while others have not." Who could face what you have and still want so badly to fill our life with love and adventure? Only you, my heart. Maybe one day I hope you can send me a postcard, drop me a line. Indicate precisely what I should say.  Yours Sincerely, wasting away.  With immense gratitude for the staff at Sibley Memorial Hospital and Dr. Jean Hoffman-Censits for her care of Craig, as a person not just a patient. Craig asked that donations be made to Dr. Hoffman-Censits research team at Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Institute, or to the Door County Land Trust, his favorite place on earth. There will be a massive celebration of Craig's life and his love sometime soon.

My deepest condolences to Craig´s family and loved ones. I had the opportunity to know Craig in freshman year in college, and he was my roommate sophomore year. Craig was a dear friend, and he will be missed. He was a beautiful, kind human being, and brought nothing but joy to those who were near him. I cannot believe he is gone.

Dear Kate,
I met you and Craig at my niece's wedding (Madeline and Sam) and was in awe of Craig's message at the wedding to them. It was reflective of his own love and feelings for you. He was indeed a special man! May God's Grace and Love surround you. Sincerely, Sissy
