Cynthia Lebow Obituary

Cynthia C. Lebow passed away in Maryland on May 7 at the age of 75 after a long illness. Cindy had a distinguished career in law and public policy in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. A graduate of UCLA and UCLA Law School, she came to Washington after her husband Allan died in a 1978 plane crash. Cindy served as counsel of Senate Majority Leader Robert C. Byrd and then General Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee when it was chaired by Joe Biden. She was a political appointee at the Justice Department during the Clinton administration and later a scholar at the Rand Institute. After moving back to Los Angeles, Cindy started her own law practice and returned to UCLA to teach constitutional law in the political science department for twelve years, where she inspired hundreds of students with her insights into the Constitution and her love of public service. In 2013, along with the parents of her late husband, Cindy spearheaded the creation of the Allan C. Lebow Supreme Court Annual Review at UCLA Law School.

Cindy was one of the smartest most knowledgeable people I ever met. She was very generous with her time and energy especially with her students ; who loved her. A terrific lawyer. She truly left footprints and made the world a better place for her having been here.

I knew Cindy in high school. We met at Temple but went to different Denver high schools. She was beautiful and smart and had a lovely voice. She played guitar. I had a crush Cindy and asked her to my senior prom. She said yes. I remember she wore a colorful formal and long over-the-elbow white gloves. We both ended up in California and my wife and I visited Cindy and her husband in LA. The plane crash changed Cindy´s life forever. I once visited her in DC when she was working in Sen. Byrd´s office. We only had sporadic contact after that. But I´ve always remembered her especially on her birthday, which is today, June 15, 2025. I looked for her on the internet and my search ended here about twenty minutes ago. I´m so sorry.

Cindy was a wonderful person and a brilliant lawyer and professor. She was also a very good friend. Our conversations were always interesting. She was a real delight to talk with. She will be missed.
