DANA G. DALRYMPLE  
Died March 7, 2018 at his home in Washington DC after suffering from dementia.He was born November 5, 1932 at Seneca Falls, NY and grew up in Lockport, NY, son of Daniel M. Dalrymple and Esther Shappee Dalrymple. He attended Cornell for pomology ('54) and an M.S. (there) and Ph.D. (Michigan State) in agricultural economics.Dana moved to D.C. in 1962 for a job with USDA, and transferred to USAID in 1972 where he remained for 36 years. His particular fields of expertise were in Soviet agriculture, high-yielding crop varieties in the developing world, and the role of science and research as a public good.* Upon retirement he published an extensive survey of the use of a Chinese medicinal herb, artemisia, in the treatment of drug-resistant malaria.Additional personal interests included the history of the National Mall and construction projects in his neighborhood, for which he was a reliable 'sidewalk superintendent'.Dana was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Helen (Wheatley), in 2009 and his brother Ross in 2001. He is survived by his sons Dan and Will, brothers Doug and Roger, sister Anne, grandchildren Kate, Tom, and Emily; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.Services will be held at a later date.
