Daniel J. Altobello

Daniel J. Altobello, of Potomac, Maryland, died peacefully on September 2, 2022 after a long illness. He was born in Westfield, Massachusetts on February 28, 1941 and grew up in Meriden, Connecticut. Dan graduated from the Canterbury School, Class of 1959. He then graduated from Georgetown University, Class of 1963, where he was President of the Yard. He remained at Georgetown to begin his professional career serving in Alumni Relations, Assistant to several Presidents, Secretary of the University and Vice President for Administration. Georgetown recognized his service with the John Carroll Award in 1984.

In 1979 Dan joined Marriott Corporation leading the Institutional Food Service division. A superior business leader, he was subsequently promoted to Executive Vice President of the Inflight Services Division. In 1989 he led a management buyout of that division, founding Caterair International Corporation where he was President and Chief Executive Officer.

Dan was a true people person-a mentor to many with a gift for remembering names. He was a talented negotiator and served as a Director of numerous corporations including Mesa Air Group, World Air Holdings, Inc., Arlington Asset Investment Corp. and Diamond Rock Hospitality Company. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Canterbury School for 12 years. He was Board Chair of CareFirst of Maryland, Suburban Hospital Foundation, Mount Holyoke College and Loyola University of Maryland

In his middle years Dan developed a passion for golf and eventually scored three holes-in-one. Although he played many famous courses, he remained devoted to Burning Tree Golf Club where he was Club President from 2010-2012. He was admired and loved by CEOs and caddies alike. He always had a kind word and friendly greeting. Dan was a true gentleman and a loyal friend. He was a collector of fine pens, a talented calligrapher, a sampler of red wines and a lover of Italian food.

He leaves behind his wife of 59 loving years, Maureen Cahill Altobello, two sons, Mark

Altobello (Karen) and David Altobello (Lee); six grandchildren, Andrew, Anna, Tommy, Derek, Michael and Brady, and sisters

Patricia and Suzanne Altobello.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 9200 Kentsdale Drive, Potomac, Maryland on Friday, September 16 at 11 a.m.

Dan's youngest grandson suffers from SYNGAP1, a rare disease that causes an intellectual disability and epilepsy. To honor Dan's memory donations may be sent to SYNGAP1 Foundation (1012 14th Street, NW #500, Washington, DC 20005) or to his alma mater, Georgetown University.

Mr. Altobello was a great leader of Caterair International. My best memories of him, at various management meetings, was his attentiveness to detail during our transition from Marriott Inflight to Caterair International. He was a conscientious business leader and a gentlemen. May God Bless Mr. Altobello and his family during this time of reflection and consolation.

Maureen
As I have shared with in the past, the relationship Dan and I developed was unique. It happened between former business rivals and well into adulthood when new relationships are not easy to begin and flourish.

This all took place because of Dan's generosity of spirit and belief in others. He was so good in offering help that it was impossible to resist.

As we say in my tradition...MAY HIS MEMORY BE FOR A BLESSING

Dear Maureen and Family:
From far, far away, the Caterair family and friends in Australia and New Zealand send our condolences to you and your family.
Dan believed in our Caterair Team. He was always positive about the people and their performance. He was a true believer in our respective efforts. From my early days with Marriott In-Flite to the establishment/opening of our first facility in Australia 1988/1990, Dan ensured we had what we needed including his personal support for success. He was always a friend to me.

Vale, Dan! It was a great ride. Bob Held, Sydney, 9/10/22

Dear Maureen and Family,
I am so saddened to learn of Dan´s passing. I have so many wonderful memories of him.
He was the reason I went to GU! He arranged for me to spend a weekend at the Nursing School and stay in the dorm. It made that my only choice when I was a high school junior.
Love, Jane and Tony Salerno
