Daniel Krivit Obituary

Died on December 20, 2025, surrounded by family singing his favorite songs. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Dan lived his life of 92 years defined by service, connection, and a deep love for knowing and understanding people and helping all who he could.
A pioneering lawyer who fought for the rights of the vulnerable, Dan served as Chief Counsel to several U.S. House of Representatives subcommittees where he shaped policies that continue to safeguard millions of lives. He wrote some of the most consequential legislation for American workers, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Coal Mine Safety and Health Act, as well as the Handicapped Children's Early Education Assistance Act.
Up until his death, Dan continued to actively work at Krivit & Krivit, P.C., the law firm he founded in 1976 in Washington, DC. Over decades of practice, he secured federal and state competitive grant funding for projects spanning education, vocational and employment training, public health, transportation and the environment.
Dan was born and raised in Jersey City, and spent a life devoted to serving the people of the state. He played a central role in revitalization efforts across New Jersey — including Hoboken, Newark, Camden, and Bayonne — and championed a $1 billion infrastructure project at the Port Newark Container Terminal. All of the work he took on reflected this unwavering belief in the power of government and law to do good and serve others. Fostering strong connections with those around him is what gave Dan the most meaning and purpose. Dan never left a conversation without asking the people around him "What can I do to help you?"
Dan is survived by his beloved wife Sandra Krivit of Great Falls, VA; Diane Krivit Katzman (David); John Krivit (Robin); Ken Krivit (Edna); Kara Phillips (Jeff); Robert Stephenson, 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his sister Harriet Hyams; and devoted family and friends from all walks of life who adored him. My condolences to Sandy and the whole Krivit family. Dan and I met in 1973, and although our paths haven't crossed in decades, I will always remember him. This photo was taken in January 1976.

I am a professor of Public Policy at UMass Amherst, and I lead a lab of Public Policy students who are studying CETA and its impact over the long-term. We are interviewing participants who had CETA jobs in their teens or 20s (who are now in their late 60s to late 70s). Their reflections on the role of CETA in their life trajectory are incredible. We, at the Equitable Transitions to Adulthood Lab, are sorry for your loss; grateful for Daniel's work; happy to know how important CETA was to him; and hopeful that we can ensure CETA is remembered for all it added to the lives of individuals and communities throughout the country.

Dan was a friend since Brown University (1954), and a generous, humorous, talented, and scholarly gentleman. Very sorry we never met for a mini reunion here in the DC area, as time and good intentions slipped away. Not surprised at his successes and loving family life— his memory holds very warm images of times gone by.
Marshall H. Cohen, Btown Class of 1954 Secretary.
