Daniel K. Umphrey

Daniel K. Umphrey passed away on May 15, 2025, in Portland, ME. Born in Fort Kent, ME, on March 17, 1954, to Helen (Kidney) Umphrey and Heber H. Umphrey, who predeceased him, he is survived by his wife Jan (Stearns); son Matthew; and daughter Jill Albers, son-in-law Stephen, and two grandchildren, Edel and Noel. He is also survived by four siblings, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Dan and Jan recently celebrated 51 years of marriage. For 43 years, they made their home and raised their children in Herndon, VA. Through his integrity and devotion to his family, work, and community, he taught his children and grandchildren to be kind, to take pride in their work and art, to persevere, and to always treat others with respect and dignity.

Dan served in the U. S. Navy, where he discovered his aptitude for electronic systems. In 1977, he was hired by Engineering Research Associates in Reston, VA, where he found his professional niche and became a highly respected Radio Frequency (RF) engineer and antenna expert who helped design, build, test, and improve systems that were crucial to national security. He deployed with the US Navy and traveled widely to support special missions in remote locations.

He subsequently worked for Raytheon E-Systems, Arco Technologies (APTI), Argon Engineering, and Boeing, from which he retired in 2021.

A service will be held at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home in Portland, ME, on June 1st at 1 p.m. In addition, a Celebration of Life will be held at XCAL in Sterling, VA, on June 7 at 6 p.m.
