Linda, We are heartbroken with you! David and I were friends since 3rd grade and he and his sister Cheryl played at our house when Mrs. Austein went back to work. I always admired him. He was very kind, funny sense of humor, interesting, compassionate, so smart....since grammar school until H.S. graduation, never missed 1 day of school! Very healthy. His greatest joy, his wife and children. Linda, my heart goes out to you and your family, you're in our prayers. With love, Caryn and Rick Foster

Dr. Austein will truly be missed. He was a wonderful, kind man and always made our family feel very comfortable whether it was "gluing" a cut so close to the eye or checking for broken bones. His quiet manner kept "mom" in check. His ties were always very entertaining too. May you rest in peace.

Dr. Austein was one of the first people we met when we moved to the area with our baby daughter, who was born prematurely and needed to be followed more closely than many other children. His quiet way was what I remember him for.
May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family, friends, patients, and co-workers.

Our condolences to the Austein family. We just heard of his passing and was so sorry to hear the news. Dr. Austein treated both my sons and was always such a good listener -- truly interested in what they had to say. He always asked good questions and was such a patient doctor -- taking the time to explain things, which is a rarity these days. He truly will be missed.

Our family was so sad to hear about Dr. Austein. He was such a wonderful dr and person. My three boys really liked his kind manner and funny ties. As a mom, I respected him and was in awe of his two diagnoses that he made with two of my boys. His smile and presence will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace. I had the privelage of working for Dr. Austein for the last 15 or so years. He was such a kind employer, always caring and respectful. He was so proud of his children and his wife. We would have wonderful conversations about kids, traveling and politics. The office will never be the same. We will carry on as he would want us to, but it will be with heavy hearts. I pray for his family that they will find comfort in knowing how much their dad and husband meant to others

Dr. Austein was a wonderful, patient man and superior physician. When we moved down to MD from NJ, a priority of mine was to find a good pediatrician. As a nurse and a mom, I was fairly particular. I truly think it was divine intervention that I found Dr. Austein on the first try. Imagine my surprise on my first visit to have him chatting about my beloved NJ that I so desperately missed and to find we grew up in towns that bordered each other. How welcoming he was! My sons also enjoyed his ties. The robot tie and Mr. Potato head were some of our favorites. Over the years, not only did I learn that he was a fantastic physician, but a thoughtful, kind person, always speaking so highly of his wife and proud of his family. To the family of Dr. Austein, his co-workers,staff, and friends I offer sincere sympathy for such a loss. Thank you for sharing him with us.

When I became a brand-new mom 12 years ago, I solicited family and friends for a pediatrician to trust my precious baby to. My main prerequisite was that the doctor be smart and know his stuff. Dr. Austein was exactly that and so much more. He was kind, and patient (especially with us new moms!), and obviously cared about our kids. Dr. Austein has taken care of each of our three children through many illnesses, injuries, and surgeries, always visiting at the hospital, following up on our care at home, and taking the time to explain things clearly. Our family has always taken such comfort in having a pediatrician that was always right in his diagnosis, and very smart in the care of our kids. My children are deeply saddened to hear of his passing because he always made them feel so comfortable in his care. Dr. Austein will be greatly missed by our whole family and we offer our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and coworkers.

My husband and I were sad to hear of Dr. Austein's passing. He was wonderful doctor. He always called my sons, "Mister." He was always very calm, and he followed up on concerns. When my oldest son got H1N1 at 6 months old, Dr. Austein called us the next day to check his progress. When we had concerns about either boy, he listened and provided thorough explanations, often backed with research. He liked to talk about his children (one child's first words were "french fry!"). I know we will miss him as our pediatrician, but our thoughts are with his family because they lost a proud husband and father.

Dr. Austein had been our pediatrician since 1990. My boys were still his patients, even though they are 21 and 20 years old, because they felt so comfortable talking with him. He will be missed.

Our sympathy goes to Dr. Austein's family and colleagues, who did so much to help him through his last months. He was a lovely man and we always have felt grateful to have him and Drs. Albert, Schwartz & Lee to turn to when our kids were sick. After another visit to the E.R. with my son for some injury, Dr. Austein reassured me with a story about his family. He said he and his wife raised two girls and neither one ever went to the E.R., but he was there several times with his son. He said with a smile, “Boys are just that way.” He really understood his patients, as well as their parents! Thank you, Dr. Austein, for all that you did for us.

We were so saddened to here about Dr. Austein's passing. I have been taking my three girls to Dr. Albert, Austien, Schwartz and Lee since they were born.. We were always so happy with whichever doctor we saw regardless when it was an emergency!! Dr. Austein was always so calm and reassuring... Having been ill myself, he was always showing concern for me as well as my kids and how we were working as a family together. Life is never fair, or always kind...but he was truly a gift to our community and kind, gentle spirit that will be truly missed. Thank you for the opportunity to see David while with his sister Cheryl this past November. We were able to share stories about his hometown of South Plainfield and I think it made him very happy to be able to talk about his childhood home. He was a wonderful, caring person and the world is a better place because of his caring nature to his patients. He was so very concerned and helpful to me when my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We will never forget what a comfort he was to our family during that time. Our sincere sympathies. To Dr. Austein's family,
We want to express how sad we are about the passing of such a wonderful person. Your husband, your brother, and your father. The entire community mourns with you.
You don't know us but we have been patients of Dr. Austein's for ~ 17 years. Through those years we cannot even count the number of times we have visited with Dr. Austein. We always wondered what tie he would be wearing on any given day, and waited for the tell-tale whistle while he looked into our kids ears. He never disappointed! We often talked about events north of the border, since we were the 'token' Canadians. Often, we spoke about the comparison of the US and Canadian healthcare systems...both of which have their share of limitations. More often, he spoke of his son Marc's hockey games, many of which took place in our old stomping grounds of Keeseville NY, not too far from Plattsburgh & Lake George, where my family often went on vacation(since it was close to the Quebec border). Clearly he was a devoted "hockey dad", since upstate NY is quite a distance from Maryland.
He very proudly told us that his wife Linda was a French professor at a university, to which I replied, that I would probably not want to converse with her for fear that she would not be able to understand my Quebecoise accent. He was obviously very proud of his family.
DR. Austein was always pleasant no matter what was going on. We saw him in late December, and although it was apparent that he was not well, he never let on about his illness. He was just very concerned that we look after my son's illness and wrote his recommendations out on a piece of paper, which I still have today.
My son is now a senior in high school and is hoping to go into medicine. I can honestly and sincerely say that I can only hope that will be as dedicated and concerned about his patients as the concern we have been shown by Dr Austein all these years.
To us, he was a wonderful doctor and moreso, a "mensch".
Our hearts go out to the entire practice; Dr Schwartz, Dr. Lee, Dr. Albert and all the nurses and staff, since this must be a terrible loss for all of you.
We will miss him always,
The Frank family,
Cheryl, Ben, Mollie, Daniel & Leeza

Thank you to Dr. Austein for all your care you gave me as a kid and as I started my family with four kids you gave them the same great care helping them stay healthy and get better when they were sick. My kids always loved waiting to see what funny tie you would be wearing for their doctor's visit and loved hearing that familiar whistle/bird you would make when you looked in their ears for an infection.
