Dr. David DeBerry admonished me, kindly, to dress in coat and tie for the annual conference, to never forget that I was from John Stewart Church. His undying commitment to Black people, his love for the church and his faith in God for liberation were undeniable. A great mind and quick wit, we miss him, even now.

My Prayer for Jon (and for us all)

Almighty God, The One who loves and cares for us in all seasons of our lives, we praise You and adore You. In grief may we find hope and in death may we be reminded of your resurrection power. We pray for peace and strength O God. Surround us with comfort and companionship as only You can do. Unite us in love and compassion as we draw closer to You. Increase our faith and devotion to You as we lean upon Your Word that affirms: “I am the Resurrection and the life, saith the Lord; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” (John 11: 25-26)

Philippians 4:8-9

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.

The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Jon and David, you know how we felt about your father. I just wish he could have moved to The Marque sooner so we could have had a longer time with him . . . but we all feel blessed that we had the time we did. He was a very special, complex man whom everyone enjoyed knowing. You are all in our prayers.
