David Hammer Obituary

HAMMER

DAVID HENRY HAMMER (Age 57)

David Henry Hammer, July 27, 1965, died peacefully in his sleep on May 22, 2023 after a sudden illness. You'd be hard-pressed to find a person who knew David and didn't adore him. His gentle, patient and loving personality touched everyone he met. David's parents were both established actors. He grew up in Maryland and attended Wootton High School in Rockville and the University of Maryland before moving to New York to complete a Master of Fine Arts in Film Directing from Columbia University. A Senior Producer at the National Gallery, David was an Emmy, Telly, Webby and Davey Award-winning filmmaker.

David's artistry as a cinematographer and director was reinforced by his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His generosity of spirit was woven into his mentoring of others, his volunteer work, his devotion to his wife Ginger and his love for his extended family and lifelong friends. He was a spiritual seeker who expressed his devotion to God through the arts.

David is survived by his wife Ginger; sister Kate, brother-in-law Indranath Neogy and niece Audrey. Donations in David's memory can be made to the non-profit group Francis on the Hill (FollowingFrancis.org). A private service will be held at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America.

David was one of the sweetest men. I will always treasure our time, especially preparing for Halloween festivities at Manchester.

How shocking. I hadn't talked to David for a few years but always assumed we would reconnect and spend some time together. He was one of my closest friends in college and someone I relied on. Please let me know when his memorial service is happening.
