DAVID SZABO Obituary

SZABO DAVID AUGUST SZABO May 20, 1975 - November 24, 2021 David August Szabo departed this life peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep Wednesday, November 24, 2021. David was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana May 20, 1975. He was 46 when he passed away. David was the second of four brothers who were born within a five year span. From the age of six months, David was raised in the Washington, DC area. David first lived in Bethesda, Maryland, then from age six until he departed for college, he was raised in Potomac, Maryland. David graduated from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1993. At Whitman, he lettered in both baseball and soccer. During his senior year, his Whitman soccer team participated in the state championship game. David graduated cum laude in Civil Engineering in 1997 from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. There, David was in several honor societies, was on the Dean's List and was a member of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity. He participated in club soccer at NC State and also coached a youth soccer team during his first years in college. After college, David worked for Steel Fab, Inc. for two years in Charlotte, North Carolina as a project engineer. He then left the company and traveled extensively in Europe for six months. Returning to the United States, he relocated to San Diego, which he had identified as the best place to live in the nation. Except for less than one year that he later spent working for a development company in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, he never left San Diego. For several years, two of his brothers lived with him in San Diego. In San Diego, David worked in the construction industry where, over the next two decades, he was a project manager for several major construction companies. Most of his career was spent building structures for educational institutions and for the United States Navy. By all accounts, David was outstanding in his profession. David had a kind and generous spirit, a cheerful and optimistic personality and a wonderful sense of humor. He loved to travel the world and loved the beauty of nature. He was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him. David will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends. David is survived by his parents, Ann Coulter Szabo and Robert Goss Szabo, of Nellysford, Virginia; his brother, Robert Coulter Szabo, and Marie Jarvis Szabo, their son, Robert Coulter Szabo, Jr. and daughter, Alina Marin Szabo, all of Fort Mill, South Carolina; his brother, Bryan Patrick Szabo, of Washington, DC and his son, Wyatt Coulter Szabo, of Church Road, Virginia; and his brother, James Michael Szabo, and Elizabeth Hanley Szabo, their son, Owen Hanley Szabo, and daughter, Lyla Ann Szabo, all of Bend, Oregon. David was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, William Wallace Coulter, Jr., MD and Martha Harper Coulter, and his paternal grandparents, August John Szabo, and Ruth Goss Szabo, all of Lafayette, Louisiana. The family is establishing a scholarship fund in David's memory in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environment Engineering of North Carolina State University. Contributions to the scholarship fund may be made in the name of David August Szabo to the North Carolina State Engineering Foundation, Inc. Private services will be held for David today in San Diego. A celebration of David's life will be occur online in early January.

Mr & Mrs Szabo, Robert, Bryan, Michael,

It is with great sadness that I came to find out that David had passed. I remember well babysitting the four boys while I was in high school - a lot of work but one I look back on with pride for the boys and fond memories. I wish I had a chance to know David as an adult as we are both civil engineers.

Love to the family - Rob

I'm so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of getting to know Dave and working with him in San Diego over the past few years. Dave was a very kind, compassionate, and good man. I enjoyed the time I was able to spend with him and he will be greatly missed. It was always clear how much he loved his family back home. I think about him often and pray for your family. May he rest in peace.

Dear Ann and Robert, I am so sorry to hear the news of David. I remember him as a youth, a classmate of my daughter Whitney when we all lived at River Falls. I am still in Potomac. Whitney lives in Virginia. It is so sad when our young ones do not outlive us. I certainly extend my condolences and deepest sympathy to you. Donna Rae Smith (formerly Donna Colella)

Dear Ann and Robert,
Please accept my condolences. David was a good man and I was fortunate to know him and enjoyed all my time with him. He always made me laugh and he never got mad at anything and always had a smile. It was as if he knew something we did not and made the best of any situation. He will be missed. I loved him and know that everyone who knew him loved him too.
RIP David Szabo

The Guedes Family

December 17, 2021

Dear Ann and Robert,

Please accept my condolences on behalf of our family. It was always nice seeing David from time to time in San Diego, and to reminisce about our years on Horseshoe Lane.

We always talked about him mowing lawns throughout River Falls (including our lawn) and my babysitting gigs, and how privileged we were to grow up in such a nice neighborhood where the families all hired each other's kids for odd jobs.

Our family unfortunately also knows the pain of losing a child, and we are so very deeply sorry you have joined this most unfortunate of clubs.

We send you much love and strength during this time.

In sympathy and solidarity,
Ana Guedes
