David York Obituary

YORK

DAVID ALLEN YORK

David A. York was born the second son of six children to Bernest A. York and Lillian Walker York on August 7, 1950, in Belfast, ME.

David graduated from Crosby High School class of 1968. David and his High School best friend, Shirley Tower gave birth to a precious girl, Davina, in 1972.

David attended Beal College in Bangor, ME, where he obtained an Associate's Degree in Business in 1972. He was hired by Kmart as a Store Opener Manager which required travel throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. In 1975, David was hired by Safeway Food Stores in the Washington, DC region, which began a 38-year career as an Associate Grocery Manager Food Clerk. Throughout his career, David received numerous commendations for Productivity, Customer Service, and Manager Awards. He would share that the children to whom he gave sample grapes became adults and brought their children to the store to meet the "Green Grocer" and get grapes. He retired in 2012.

For many years, David raised Miniature Schnauzers having at one point as many as thirty dogs. He was an avid active member of the Mount Vernon Miniature Schnauzer Club, and he participated in many shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

In 1989, David met David K. North, and together they began a matchless bond of devotion, friendship, and love. They formalized their commitment to one another in a Holy Union Ceremony on May 21, 1994, and then became legally married on October 26, 2015. Renown for dressing alike, the "Davids" became an inseparable dynamic resource of laughter and positivity wherever their travels took them. In 2020, the "Uncle Davids" became an internet viral phenomenon with adoring "nieces and nephews" (niblings) around the globe enjoying regular wholesome posts from Camp Davids. The Davids' annual adventures included wilderness camping, kayaking, fishing, feeding eagles and discovering moose wading in bogs in remote northern Maine. These activities brought him great joy. David loved to sing along unashamedly to the music of the 70's, especially ABBA and Diana Ross, freely making up lyrics he didn't know.

Everyone that knew David, knew him as a fierce friend, deeply devoted to family, always ready and willing to welcome and give big bear hugs. Anyone meeting him would be mesmerized by his intense blue eyes and infectious smile. He was immensely proud of his big full beard, and he loved playing Santa every year.

David was an avid photographer and videographer, keeping his equipment with him wherever he went, to stay ever ready for "that awesome shot". He especially enjoyed nature photography. David was the camera man for worship services at Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Washington, DC, for 10 years, and Holy Redeemer MCC for 14 years. David was also the camera guy for Mosaic Harmony Community Choir for 25 years. David touched (and is still touching) countless lives by his making and giving photo albums and video recordings of peoples' special celebrations and events. Never realizing that he was creating a lasting legacy of kindness and generosity, people share their albums and remember their events, and him.

In August of 2019, David was diagnosed as having an aggressive form of cancer called Multiple Myeloma. He began a three-year journey of numerous treatment regimens in hopes of abating the disease progression. Throughout his treatments, he felt blessed that he wasn't experiencing any pain or discomfort, just diminishing capacities and strength. On Thursday, July 21, 2022, and 1:10 p.m, at home in his own bed, he breathed his last breath in his sleep. He now abides fully in our hearts, and in eternity.

David leaves to mourn his devoted Spouse, David K. North, his Daughter, Davina Giggey of Albion, ME, two Sisters, Florence (and Richard) Yeaton of Belfast, ME, and Maxine Smirles of Somersworth, NH, one Brother, Harold York of Belfast, ME, two grandsons, Michael Giggey (Tavia) of Albion, ME, and Derrick Giggey (Marisa) of El Paso, TX, four great-grandchildren, Emilly, Faith, Trent, and Ella Mae, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and myriads of friends and Instagram niblings.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Bernest and Lillian York, his brother Bernest Jr. (Buzzy) York, and his sister Charline Hurd.

The Celebration of Life Gathering is being held on Friday, August 19, 2022, at 4 p.m., at Picnic Site #6, Rock Creek Park, NW, Washington, DC. All are welcome, AND THAT EXCLUDES NO ONE. In lieu of flowers please donate to mosaicharmony.org

Uncle David, when next I visit home in Maine, a bit further along the coast from your hometown, I look forward to a leisurely stroll through the woods with you.

For now I am sending boundless love to the rest of the family. What a blessing to have had our hearts touched by a spirit such as his...those of us near and far alike. To Uncle David K, I hope you can feel the hug I offer you now - as many hugs as you need, good any time.

Love and gratitude to you both, Uncles David. Always & always.

What a beautiful tribute to an incredible person`s life, written by someone who clearly cherished David´s whole heart with theirs. I truly hope to be able to live a life filled with so much joy, community, creation, love and giving. In my culture, one says "May his memory be for a blessing in comfort," and it is absolutely certain that David´s memory will be.
