DAVID ZATZ Obituary

ZATZ DAVID ZATZ December 29, 2021. Dave was born on August 23, 1930 in Washington, DC to Ben and Rose Zatz. He was the beloved husband of his wife of 59 years, Natalie (Dosik) Zatz. Devoted father of Debra Zatz, Pamela Rothenstein (David) and Benjamin Zatz (Megan). Cherished Zayde of grandchildren, Reed Kronen, Lindsey and Adam Rothenstein and Zachary, Hannah and Oliver Zatz. He will also be forever remembered by his nieces nephews and extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his dear sisters, Anne Abel (Edward) and Dorothy Cohen (Morris). Dave loved baseball. He was all-high first baseman at Eastern High School and received an athletic scholarship to play baseball at the University of Maryland. While in school his National Guard unit was activated during the Korean War and he was assigned to Camp Edwards in Massachusetts, where he played on the camp baseball team as the only position player without professional experience. After serving in the U. S. Army he returned to the University of Maryland and received the Burger Trophy as the outstand- ing senior baseball player. He also coached the University's Freshman Baseball Team and the Agricultural Post Junior American League baseball team to successful seasons. After receiving his B.S. degree from the University of Maryland, Dave attended George Washington University, where he received a M.S and Doctorate of Education (EdD) degrees. He then went to serve as a respected elementary school teacher and principal in Prince Georges County, Maryland for 27 years. The NAESP Journal recognized Dave as one of the nation's outstanding principals for his leadership in the development of student council programs and the democratization of elementary schools. He also served as an associate professor in the College of General Studies at the George Washington University. Dave then left the field of education to found and served for many years as president of Edmuat, Inc., a company with its purpose to generate funds in support of area schools through a variety of funding methods and to disseminate educational materials for elementary school principals, teachers and parents. In retirement, Dave enjoyed playing a significant amount of tennis and golf, including with his godson, Steven Cohen and the seniors at Cabin John Park, as well as spending time with his grandchildren and family. And as a devoted fan of the Washington Nationals, Dave rarely missed watching their games on television and was thrilled when they won the World Series in 2019. Dr. Zatz was my Principal when I was a student at Bladensburg Elementary. Had a few trips to his adduce for not being the well disciplined human that I am now. Very fond memories of him. RIP Dr. Zatz.

Dr. Zatz was the principal of Bladensburg Elementary School when he hired me right out of college to teach 4th grade. Clearly, he was a risk-taker for giving me that opportunity. He was kind and very patient. I listened to his advice and learned so much. Thank you and rest in peace, Dr. Zatz. My condolences to his family.
