Denny D'Alelio Obituary

Col. Denny F. d''Alelio (Ret.)
Col. Denny F. d''Alelio, USAF (Ret.) left this world peacefully surrounded by his family on February 20, 2016 after a long and hard fought battle against leukemia. Denny was born in Boston, MA November 7, 1935 to Gaetano and Josephine d''Alelio. In 1958 Denny married Suellen Haley and together they had six children. Their love of children was visible when they also cared for 28 foster babies placed by Catholic Charities. Denny was predeceased by his wife Susie and is survived by six children: Elizabeth d''Alelio, John d''Alelio, Geoff d''Alelio and his wife Kathy, Amy Hobbs (d''Alelio) and her husband Dale, Jim d''Alelio and his wife Beth, and Denny J. d''Alelio and his wife Kathie. Denny and Susie''s family grew to 14 grandchildren. Denny is survived by his sisters Ellen d''Alelio, and her husband Dave Towey, Jane (d''Alelio) Payne, a brother, William d''Alelio. Denny and Susie''s life focus was their family. With a door that was always open, Denny and Susie relished seeing them grow, cheered their successes, and provided a sympathetic shoulders when needed. Following his military career Denny worked for several defense and security companies in senior positions. However, of the many titles he was given during his life, "Poppie" was the one of which he was proudest. A long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, his love of children was most visible in "Project Manger", a program that he founded to provide cribs to mothers who made the decision to give birth to her child. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 29, 2016 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd, Fairfax, VA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Tuesday March 1, 2016 at 8800 Braddock Rd, Annandale, VA. Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to "Project Manger", C/O a Woman''s Choice, 6201 Leesburg Pike, Ste. 220, Falls Church, VA 22044.www.fmfh.com

I had the good fortune of working with Denny during the 2012 campaign season. Although my time knowing Denny was short in comparison, I will always consider him a friend and a mentor. When we met, I was just getting out of college on my first political campaign as a professional and he helped guide me during that phase of my life and career. I will always be grateful for Denny's kind words, constructive criticisms, his open-door policy, and his willingness to listen. Thank you for everything, Denny. I will miss you.

I met Denny at Syscon in the late 80's/early 90's...he sat in the office next to me...we loved giving each other a bad time on many occasions. I most remember how much he loved his own kids as well as all the foster kids that he and Susie helped. I saw him infrequently at Northrop where he'd stop by and take me to lunch. I always thought he was such a good person...he and his family are in my prayers.

I was shocked to hear of Denny's passing. I am someone who thought Denny would live forever, and he will in the hearts of us who were privileged to work with him. Denny was my "guardian angel" during my times in Singapore. His support made my visits much more productive and enjoyable.
