Diana Bird Obituary

BIRD, DIANA

She passed away peacefully at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, January, 30, 2004 at the ripe age of 81. Born in Virginia and raised in Florida, she came to Washington after WW II as a protege of the National Institute of Public Affairs. She worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, married Lee, her husband of 55 years, had two children, became a Quaker, taught Freshman English at the Madeira School, busied herself with the affairs of the Friends Service Committee, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the Council for a Livable World, and she co-founded "The Art Group," composed originally of wives of upwardly striving young lawyers, which group has flourished for some 50 years. Determinedly intellectual, she studied art, politics, literature, history, and people. She was a dedicated Friend, a fierce Democrat, a tolerant wife, devoted mother of Chris and Dr. Stephanie, whose respective spouses are Mary Jane Cappello, a teacher, and Dr. Fred Ausubel, a professor at the Harvard Medical School. She was also an admiring and loving grandma to her three glorious grandchildren, Anna, Emily, and Jonathan Ausubel. Services will be held at a later date.
