DOLORES GRIFFIS CANNON "Dee"

Dolores "Dee" Griffis Cannon, 93, of Edgewater, MD, passed away in the early hours of August 6, 2023 surrounded by her children.

Dee was born on Valentines Day, 1930. She grew up on Longfellow Street in N.E. Washington D.C. She had many great memories growing up there. She attended Keene Elementary, Paul Junior High (where she met her future husband, Bill Cannon) and Coolidge High School where she belonged to Lambda Sigma Delta Sorority.

Music was always in the air in the Griffis household. While in high school, her parents opened their home to all her friends for a dance social every Friday night and her father and his friends often gathered on the front porch to play their guitars, banjo's and mandolins.

While growing up during the Great Depression, her parents taught her the importance of helping people in need. Her house wasn't far from a railroad track and those traveling south looking for work would frequently showed up at her home in search of a good meal, which her mother always provided. This had a profound impact on Dee and she learned at an early age what it meant to serve and help others by the example of her parents.

Following high school, she married and worked at the Office of Strategic Service, in the Office of Special Intelligence Operations.

She and her husband moved to Silver Spring, MD in 1956 where she raised her three children.

In the late 1960's she started a new job at Giant Food and worked there for 30 years.

Dee was a woman of faith with deep convictions; trusting in Christ, her Lord and Savior.

She never wavered from her devotion to family, friends and even strangers.

She was strong, spunky and resilient. She had a spontaneous and mischievous sense of humor. Kind and caring to all, she was the best mother you could possibly imagine.

Her creed was to show you rather than tell you how to live, and she did it masterfully.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Esther Griffis, her sisters, Geraldine Hayes and Dorothy Travis and husband, Bill Cannon.

She is survived by her loving sister, Gloria Edwards and her devoted children, Craig (Valerie), Kimberly and Scott.

A graveside celebration of life will be held on August 14, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Lincoln Cemetary in Brentwood, MD.
