DONALD REED CHANDLER
Donald Reed Chandler, noted Architect, passed away December 20, 2019 at his home in Washington, VA. A delayed Celebration of his Life will be held there Saturday, September 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. Friends and clients are cordially invited to attend. For more information, contact[email protected] Donald received his Architectural degree from NC State University School of Design. His architectural work was widely praised and he is highlighted as one of the early NC Triangle Modernists. Chandler worked for Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Chloethiel Woodard Smith, Mariani Architects, before opening his own firm in McLean/Great Falls VA, and later in Washington, VA where he resided with his wife, Denise. A devotee of Frank Lloyd Wright, Donald's architectural expertise was highly sought after and he completed more than 600 commissions throughout the United States. Donald is fondly remembered for his architecture, singing of country music, storytelling, and warmth and good humor towards everyone he met.

Donald was my father's cousin making him my second cousin. I remember as a child going to go visit Donald and his first wife, Carolyn, with my parents, Bill & June Umstead, at his home on Chandler Drive. He designed it from Frank Lloyd Wright.
Denise, Catherine and Charlie, you have been in my thoughts and prayers. I have lived in Minneapolis since 1984 and miss Virginia. If you wish, I can be contacted at "[email protected]". Take care of yourselves.
