DONALD MALCOLN THOMPSON PhD

Dr. Donald Malcolm Thompson, 83, professor of Pharmacology at Georgetown University Medical School for 25 years, died on January 17, 2023, at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital following a fall and a hip replacement complicated by COPD. He was also a visiting professor in the psychology department at the University of Maryland and did research on repeated acquisition at the Institute for Behavioral Research. He published many scholarly papers on this learning and memory technique and used this procedure to study the effects of psychotropic drugs on pigeons and monkeys at Georgetown.

Dr. Thompson was born August 16, 1939, in St. Louis, MO. He lived for the last 58 years in Silver Spring and Gaithersburg, MD. He received his BA in Psychology from Southern Illinois University in 1961 and his MA and PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Virginia in1963 and 1967. After retiring in 1994 he volunteered with the Gaithersburg Chapter of AARP for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, his son and daughter-in-law Marc and Nadine Thompson of Germantown, MD, his daughter Dr. Sharon Thompson-Schill of Philadelphia, PA, six grandchildren from Germantown, MD and Boston, MA, two brothers Ralph and Hadley Thompson from Tennessee and Minnesota, two sisters Barbara Mesey and Katherine Ferrell from Pennsylvia and Texas and many friends.

There will be a celebration of life for Don Thompson on March 11, 2023 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott in Gaithersburg. In lieu of flowers send a contribution in Don's memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Kidney Association.
