Dorinda Evans Obituary

Dorinda Evans, resident of Rockville, MD, died September 13, 2025, at Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute in Baltimore after a battle with a rare autoimmune disease.

A native of Wakefield, MA, Dorinda (a.k.a. Dindy) attended Dana Hall in Wellesley, MA and received her BA in Art History at Wheaton College in Norton, MA.

She enjoyed doing research, leading her to explore our world from ancient sites to varied cultures and art collections worldwide.

Dorinda began her career serving several years on the curatorial staff at Washington, DC's National Gallery and Phillip's Gallery. She moved to London to study at London University's Courtauld Institute of Art, where she received her doctorate in Art History. Upon her return, she joined the Art History faculty at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and retired after chairing that department for many years.

Although Dorinda's professional focus drew her to archeological sites and art collections worldwide, her specific area of expertise was Early American Portraiture. She authored several biographies including of the notable Gilbert Stuart, raising their profiles and ensuring the accurate attribution as well as identifying forgeries of their work. She lectured widely and collaborated with curators and librarians within the US and abroad. She was still at work, collaborating with them on her latest research right up to her death.

Dindy leaves behind her daughter, Antonia Tamsen; siblings Tamsen Evans George, Bronwyn Evans Loring, and G. Jay Evans. She lost her sister, Priscilla Evans Loring, posthumously - three weeks after her death.
