Doris Hobbs Obituary


DORIS MILLER HOBBS  1931 - 2011  
Doris died October 21, 2011 in Sydney, Australia, of complications of ovarian cancer.Doris grew up in Princeton, NJ, where her father, James Douglas Brown, served as Dean of the Faculty and Provost of Princeton University. She was a 1953 graduate of Vassar College. She later studied at St. Anne's College, Oxford, England, and worked in Tokyo for two years before moving with her husband, Andrew P. Miller, to Charlottesville, VA. The family lived in Abingdon, VA until Mr. Miller was elected Attorney General of Virginia in 1969. In 1978, Mr. Miller lost the U.S. Senate race to John Warner and the family moved to Alexandria. Doris was very active in community and political efforts, especially the arts and supported the Barter Theater, Virginia Center of Creative Arts, Virginia Museum, Richmond Ballet, Virginia Commission for the Arts and the Torpedo Factory.In 1988, the Millers divorced, and Doris married Michael J. Hobbs of Sydney, Australia. They have been very involved in the arts and have traveled worldwide.Doris is survived by her husband Michael and four step-children and their families in Australia and England, her daughters, Julia Thomas and Elise Miller. Her son, Pickens Miller, died last July. She also leaves several nephews and nieces and their families including Anne Mattheisen, Meredith Ellsworth, and James D. Brown, III. Service will be held on November 4, 2011 in Australia.
