Duane Beckhorn Obituary
Born in Penn Yan, NY, Duane grew up on a small farm and attended a one-room school. This modest upbringing instilled a strong work ethic in him. He earned his BA from Syracuse University and a JD from Indiana University, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in law.
After completing his service in the Army and a clerkship with the U.S. Tax Court, Duane practiced law in Northern Virginia for 40 years. He was the managing partner of Hazel Beckhorn & Hanes and its successor firms for 26 of those years, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike for his integrity, legal acumen, and steady leadership.
Duane's love of the arts, education, and the Chesapeake was reflected in his service on the Boards of Directors of the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Keuka College, and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. He was also a proud member of the Metropolitan Club of the City of Washington and the New York Yacht Club.
Known for his wry sense of humor and thoughtful conversation, Duane was a man of intellect and charm who enriched the lives of those around him. He actively pursued his passions for sailing, travel, and the arts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Marie M. Beckhorn; his step-siblings, Louis, Blanche, and Ralph; and his beloved wife and soul mate of 70 years, Jean H. Beckhorn.
Duane is survived by his sons, Kirk D. Beckhorn (Christina) and Jay A. Beckhorn (Karen), and his four grandchildren: Elena, Catherine, Carole, and William.
A celebration of Duane's life will be held at 11 a.m. on February 22, 2025, at The Church of the Holy Trinity, 502 S. Morris St., Oxford, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, 13470 Dowell Road, Solomons, MD 20688, or the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, 213 N Talbot Street, St. Michaels, MD 21663.
