of Sumter, South Carolina, died June 29, 2007 at home. He was born August 20, 1947 at Fort Belvoir, VA, son of the late Col. and Mrs. Edmund Kirby-Smith III. He was the great-grandson of the Civil War General, Edmund Kirby-Smith. He grew up in this area. Mr. Kirby-Smith graduated in Philosophy from University of the South, Sewanee, TN, the location of his family's home, and earned an Engineering Master's from Memphis State University. He managed restoration of historic buildings in Washington and Baltimore, MD for H.A. Knott, Inc. In his later years, he pursued his love of plants and gardens, designing and maintaining gardens and decorative ponds around Georgetown and in South Carolina. Mr. Kirby-Smith was well known for his eloquence, erudition and wit. He is survived by his daughter, Snowden Maria "Mia" Kirby-Smith of Takoma Park, MD and his sister, Maria J. Kirby-Smith, of Camden, SC. A memorial service will be held in September in Columbia, SC. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to: www.greyrescue.com

Hope he has found a nice water garden, a library of good books, surround sound of all his favorite tunes with his four legged friend at his side and they both have an audience of family, friends and strangers to enlighten days on end as we left here behind with our memories on occasion bring forth a smile of an Edmundism.
