Edna Kathleen Tycz, 87, of Kearneysville, WV died on July 28, 2024.
https://www.forevermissed.com/kathy-tycz/about. Born June 26, 1937 in Worcester, MA, daughter of Alexander J. and Janet E. (Kelly) Tycz. Kathy lost her mother at a very young age and was raised by her father and grandmother in Webster, MA. She attended boarding school at St. John Villa in NY, and earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia University.
After graduating she worked with indigenous Indian tribes of the southwest, and as an educator in California. Following the death of her fiancé, she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked first at the Library of Congress and then at the Supreme Court of the United States where she served as the head of the Documents Control Unit, Clerk's Office until her retirement at age 83. Kathy was revered at the Court as dedicated, hard-working, and meticulous, and her spirited and energetic personality ensured there were few dull moments in her
presence.
In 1993, she purchased a farm in Kearneysville, WV, which she named Belmont Farm after her beloved thoroughbred champion, Belmont Spy. Kathy rose every day before dawn to care for the horses, then commuted two hours each way to the Court and back, a routine she maintained until her retirement.
Kathy loved learning, traveling, and above all else, helping others, often seeking opportunities to combine all three. Through connections she made in her travels, she assisted in the building of an apartment home for an impoverished family in Bethlehem, aided in the securing of resources to open a computer lab at a joint Muslim and Christian youth educational center, also in Bethlehem, and volunteered a week at St. Mother Teresa's home for dying destitute in Calcutta. Closer to home, Kathy provided shelter, food and clothing to the needy, hosted a therapeutic horse-riding program for autistic children, and rescued and cared for numerous stray animals.
Kathy touched the lives of many across the globe. She leaves behind her friend and housemate Susan Stevenson, family members, and many loving friends of the Supreme Court, including Donald M. Baker.
