Edward Caine Obituary

Edward A. Caine, 82, of McLean, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, surrounded by members of his loving family.
Ed was born on June 5, 1943, in Washington, DC, to Jeanette and Walter Caine. After graduating from high school in Shreveport, Louisiana, he went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Lehigh University in 1965, followed by his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. After completing law school, Ed served for two years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, and later earned a Master of Laws degree from The George Washington University.
Ed's career was shaped by his expertise in public utility law, specializing in electricity, natural gas, and telecommunications. He began working at Shannon and Morley, a law firm in Washington, DC, while enrolled in law school and returned to the firm after his military service. In 1972, he joined Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) to lead its regulatory law department. He later held a similar role at American Electric Power in New York City before returning to Pepco to help establish and lead its first financial subsidiary, Pepco Holdings, Inc. He concluded his distinguished career at Fletcher, Heald and Hildreth, focusing on telecommunications law.

In 1980, Ed married the love of his life, Susan Power. Together they raised three children, Stephen, Michael, and Kathryn. He supported each of them with unwavering love and guidance, and he found deep joy in encouraging their interests and watching them grow over the years. He welcomed their partners (Heidi, Amy, and Taylor) into the family with warmth and kindness. He was a devoted grandfather who cherished time with Cameron, Jack, and Isabella, and was a loving uncle to his niece, Jeanne. Ed was a steadfast and caring presence, always ready to share his wisdom with those he loved. His family was the most important part of his life.
After retiring in 2004, Ed devoted more time to his passions, which included reading, writing, and collecting. A true scholar at heart, he shared his curiosity and love of storytelling with those around him, passing on a lifelong appreciation for learning and history to his family. He especially enjoyed traveling to support their many pursuits.
Ed was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Stephen and Martin. He is survived by his beloved family, who will carry forward his love and memory. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 22, 2025.

John and I have some great memories with Susan and Ed. When they would come west we enjoyed some good talks and great company. They have had a loving and supportive marriage, and great times with their children and grandchildren. I know you are now at peace Ed. We send our prayers and love to you, Susan and the extended family.

Susan and Family - I am so sorry for your loss. I did not know Ed directly, but during my relatively long tenure as a Pepco employee it was impossible not to come into contact with his legacy at the company. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

I met Ed through Ebay as he bought an old copper engraving from me. His passion for collecting engravings matched mine. We had wonderful talks on engravings and our personal collections and will miss his expertise greatly . Ed was a passionate collector and an expert on many things. Thanks for being my friend! My Condolences to the entire Caine Family.

I knew Ed Caine for almost half a century. During that time he was, in turns, my boss, mentor, and colleague in the practice of law. I never worked with a finer lawyer nor had a better friend. I will miss him. Ginny and I send our love and condolences to Sue, Kathryn, Stephen, and Michael on their loss of a good and loving husband and father.

Our sincere condolences. Such a wonderful friend, I feel honored to kmown him. Ed was so passionate and scholarly in his collecting. Never about the value/money, always about the item - the who, where, what, when and how - my favorite times with Ed were our Show-and-Tell sessions!
