In 1970 when I was invited from Texas to Virginia to take the position of The Executive Director of VPhA, I was fortunate to have Ed Spearbeck on my State Council representing the Potomac District. His input on many subjects including the budget, reorganization of VPhA's governmental structure and many other pharmacy topics too numerous to mention.
After leaving VPhA on January 1, 1975, I joined the National Association of Retail Druggists, as Director of Professional Affairs. Our paths contined to cross since Ed was also active in National Pharmacy Affairs. His personal input to me at the National level was invalueable.
After returning to Virginia Pharmacy in 1978, Ed and Lorraine were still my close friends during my entire Pharmacy life in Virginia. Their loss to me is devastating since they always accepted me as a Virginian. Who will take their place?

Ed hired me for my first job as a pharmacist with Drug Fair. He was a man of his word and a true gentleman. Little did I know but he was a great family friend to my husband's family (Greg Combs, father Bill Combs)... Ed and Loraine came to our wedding in Waynesboro... It was as if Ed brought us together since he hired me in North Dakota and I found my sweet husband was connected to him too!! He will be missed in the pharmacy world!!! I was so saddened to hear the news, but the good news is... Heaven is for real!! Mary Alice Combs

Ed was one of my mentors and friends in the pharmacy profession. He was always there to listen and offer wise advice as I faced tough choices and situations. He challenged me to always do my best and evaluate issues from many different points of view before reacting. His leadership and finance skills were superior. He always gave so much of himself to others. I will miss his leadership, advice and support. I know he and Lorraine gave unselfishly to the profession over the years. His example of leadership and unselfish giving are an example for us all. Wishes of sympathy and comfort for his family as they mourn.

I first met Ed professionally some 22 years ago when he was working as Director of Professional Services for for AARP. He was a standup guy and always available to offer an expert opinion on a number of pharmacy issues. Through the years we attended many of the same professional meetings and it was always a pleasure chatting and learning from him. He will be missed by me and everyone whose life he's touched.

It has always been an honor as both a pharmacist and a person to have a conversation with Ed. With his vast experiences he always had a way of being able to state quite succinctly what really mattered for a particular subject. He had quite a gift for his ability to also keep in tune with what was really important to the younger generations as well. He has helped a lot of people in many different ways.
