EDWARD LEWIS STEPHENS

Edward Lewis Stephens of Chevy Chase, Maryland, age 87, on August 19, 2022. Born in September 1934 in Washington, DC to Earl Randolph and Margaret Kelly Stephens, he was reared in Chicago until 1950, when he returned to Washington, where he graduated from Gonzaga and the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. He attended graduate school at the University of Munich on an Adenauer Fellowship. He served in the Army in Germany.

He retired from the Senior Executive Service after September 11th, the majority of his government career spent at the Pentagon following earlier tours to various overseas postings. For his work he received numerous awards and recognition, both from the Defense Department as well as from the German government, who awarded him the Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, for his career-long effort to improve U.S.- German relations.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Emily Lloyd Stephens, of Chevy Chase, and by his son, Allen Southall Stephens, of New York and Chevy Chase, as well as by a sister, Denaire McNally (Mrs. Robert,) of Montross, Virginia, and by many fond nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Margot Gallagher.

Services will be private. A celebration of life will be held later in the year. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army or to the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
